Meralco is drawing inspiration from Powerade’s upset win over top seed B-MEG last week.
The Bolts battle for survival as they seek the equalizer over the Petron Blaze in Game 2 of their best-of-three quarterfinal series of the 2011 PBA Philippine Cup Wednesday at the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo City.
The Bolts and Boosters square off at 7:30 p.m. with the former hoping to send the series to a deciding Game 3 on Friday.
In the first game, Rain or Shine seeks the clincher in Game 2 of their own quarterfinal series against Barangay Ginebra at 5:15 p.m.
Meralco head coach Ryan Gregorio said the Tigers’ inspiring win over the Llamdos gave them hope in the series after dropping Game 1, 84-91.
“The victory of the eighth seed defeating the first seed inspired us to believe that it can be done,” said Gregorio.
“With our back against the wall and fighting for survival against the mighty Petron Boosters, I can’t help but to challenge our players say ‘why not us?” he added.
Meralco was still in the thick of things in Game 1 before Boosters guard Alex Cabagnot completed back-to-back four-point plays that spelled the doom for them.
But still, his Bolts are not giving up their hope to enter their first semifinal stint in the PBA.
“We believe that for us as long as they have not won two times, we still have a chance,” said Gregorio. “And as a coach I’ve been in situations like these and the strongest armor that one must have is faith.”
Boosters head coach Ato Agustin knows that series is far from over and they need to come up with another solid showing to arrange the best-of-seven semis showdown with Talk ‘N Text.
“Maganda at 1-0 dahil mataas ang confidence mo going to the second game pero we need to stay focused,” he said. “May tendency kasi ang team na mag-relax.”
In the opener, Elasto Painters head coach Yeng Guiao also wants to end their own series against the Kings after their 112-105 come-from-behind overtime win in Game 1.
“We have to play our best basketball to beat Ginebra. They are more dangerous with their backs against the wall,” said Guiao. “Our main concern is still containing their guards. Our offense can take care of itself.”
