Jackson Vroman debuts for Barangay Ginebra on Sunday when the Kings challenge Powerade in the first game of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.
Vroman, an NBA veteran who is coming off a stint in China, arrived last Monday, but is already nursing an injury after getting accidentally hit Rico Villanueva in a team scrimmage.
Ginebra coach Siot Tanquingcen said Vroman is ready in their 4:15 p.m. encounter with the Tigers.
“Okay na naman ang injury niya. He’s used to it na and he will definitely suit up tomorrow,” said Tanquingcen whose team is holding a 2-1 win-loss mark.
Vroman, who played for the Lebanese basketball team in the 2009 FIBA Asia Championship as its naturalized player, replaced Chris Alexander after just three games in the tournament.
Tanquingcen said Alexander was not the same player compared to when he first arrived here and led Ginebra to a crown in the 2007-08 Fiesta Cup.
The Kings mentor hopes that Vroman is the right import that they are searching to end four-year title drought.
Vroman will be tested by fellow ex-NBA campaigner Dwayne Jones, who has been superb in providing the Tigers a force inside the shaded lane.
But Jones was a non-factor in Powerade’s 101-91 loss to Barako Bull last Friday, a defeat that snapped the Tigers’ mini two-game run.
“It will be another test of character for us, how do we bounce back off a loss?” said Tigers head coach Bo Perasol who drew only 19 markers from Jones.
“We know the importance of every game in attaining our goal. We just have to battle it out every time,” he added.
In the main game, Petron Blaze eyes its third straight win against Rain or Shine as the square off at 6:30 p.m.
After a 0-2 start, the Boosters have won their last two while the Elasto Painters are the lower half of the standings with 1-3 mark.
