Ginebra takes on streaking Powerade; Rain or Shine, Meralco battle

Barangay Ginebra collides with streaking Powerade in the main game of the PBA Governors’ Cup Friday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
The Kings and the Tigers square off at 7:30 p.m. while Rain or Shine tries to bounce back from a loss when it faces Meralco in their 5:15 p.m. meeting.
Ginebra and Powerade are tied in the standings with 3-2 win-loss marks and the winner jumps up to the second spot.
The Tigers are on a roll, having won their last three assignments after a 0-2 start while the Kings came from an 83-80 win against defending champion Petron Blaze to snap a two-game slide.
“This is one of the few situations in this conference we still control of our chances. If we do what we are being asked of us, we can be in a position to grab a win and improve our position,” said Powerade mentor Bo Perasol.
“But it is always tough to compete against Ginebra,” he added.
Ginebra coach Siot Tanquingcen shared a similar sentiment about Powerade, adding that the Tigers are playing good basketball in the last three games.
“Powerade can score in so many ways. We need to limit their good looks at the basket and make sure we take care of the ball on the offensive end,” said Tanquingcen.
Since tapping Omar Sneed, the Tigers are unbeaten in three games with Gary David stretching his historic run of scoring 20 or more points up to 19 games.
In the opener, the Elasto Painters (4-1) try to bounce back from a disappointing loss to Powerade as they collide with the Bolts (2-3).
Rain or Shine’s unbeaten start was snapped by Powerade, 98-104, while Meralco stayed in the hunt for the semis with a 100-95 win against Alaska.
“Sometimes a loss can be better for a team than a win, especially in the long run. We learned from our loss versus Powerade and gave us a new resolve to work even harder in our next games,” said Elasto Painters coach Yeng Guiao.
“Our game against Meralco will be the test of this new resolve,” he added.
Bolts coach Ryan Gregorio knows that this is a big game for the team.
“Rain or Shine is at the top of the standings a victory for us can propel us to the middle while a loss can pull us down the cellar,” he said.
