Is Ginebra the favorite in Philippine Cup? ‘Among fans,’ says Gin Kings exec
With moves to beef up its frontline, observers agree that Barangay Ginebra San Miguel should be counted among the favorites for the Philippine Cup, which tips off this Sunday.
The Gin Kings drafted 7-foot center Greg Slaughter with the first overall pick. Ginebra also swung a trade that gave them the fourth pick, which they used on athletic wingman James Forrester.
Ginebra also added ceiling with the acquisition of 6-foot-7 Jay-R Reyes in exchange for Kerby Raymundo. Japeth Aguilar, a 6-foot-9 forward, will also make his return to the team after missing most of last conference because of injury.
But team executive Robert Non is quick to brush off the favorite tag.
“Gusto namin yan, kami ang favorite… kami ang favorite ng fans,” he said in jest.
Non said the team still needs to develop chemistry, with only three players — Mark Caguioa, Jayjay Helterbrand, and Billy Mamaril — having spent more than one full season with the squad.
“Yes, lumakas kami, but that’s just on paper,” said Non. “With only three players from the old group, we’re a work in progress, kailangan pa ng team mag-jell.”
Still, there’s no denying the talent upgrade for the Gin Kings this season. Up-and-coming guard Emman Monfort joined the team from Barako Bull in the offseason, while Dylan Ababou is expected to get his old form back after suffering an ACL injury last season.
Rounding out the Ginebra roster is Bryan Faundo, a banger who could serve as a backup at both frontcourt positions.
