With Ginebra shorthanded, Mac Baracael plays finest game for Gin Kings

“Bata, tingin ko puputok ka ngayong gabi.”

That was what Barangay Ginebra San Miguel coach Alfrancis Chua told forward Mac Baracael before the Gin Kings’ crucial match against the Meralco Bolts on Sunday.

It was a curious prediction for Chua, considering that Baracael had struggled all tournament long in his first conference with Ginebra. The former Far Eastern University forward had scored in double-digits just once in his previous 11 games for the team — 14 points in a blowout victory in Barako Bull.

But Baracael was not about to make a liar of his coach. Taking advantage of mismatches at the small forward spot with Meralco going with a three-guard rotation, he finished with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting, and added six rebounds for good measure.

He did it in the clutch, too. Baracael scored 10 points in a crucial fourth quarter run that gave Ginebra a cushion to withstand a late rally from the Bolts.

It also came at a critical juncture in the elimination round, with Ginebra missing key players Mark Caguioa and Kerby Raymundo from its rotation.

For Chua, Baracael’s explosion after struggling for most of the conference underlines a key trait of Ginebra that has allowed the team to turn around its Commissioner’s Cup campaign. After losing their first four games, the Gin Kings have won seven of their last eight matches.

“Basta kami, laro lang ng laro,” said Chua.
