LA Tenorio makes up for crucial turnovers with big plays for Ginebra

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel point guard LA Tenorio knows that when the game is on the line, the ball will likely find its way to his hands.

It’s a heavy responsibility, but one that the veteran guard knows that he must carry.

“Most of the time nasa akin yung bola eh,” Tenorio said after the game.

“Hindi naman sa (nagmamayabang), pero the team needs me talaga. Nasa akin yung bola to decide for the team.”

In Game Four of the PLDT Home DSL Philippine Cup semifinals against the San Mig Super Coffee Mixers, he had some mixed results in the fourth quarter. He made some big shots in this one, including two crucial free throws with 5.4 seconds remaining that gave Ginebra a slight 85-82 edge heading into the final possession.

But Tenorio also had a couple of turnovers in the fourth, which he took full responsibility for.

“Marami akong gustong gawin towards the end. It ended up, turnover lang talaga yung nangyari. I admit naman may lapses towards the end of the game,” he said.

“I made sure naman na babawi ako after nun.”

That he did, scoring five of the team’s last seven points down the stretch.

He broke a 78-all deadlock near the two-minute mark with a running shot that swung the lead back Ginebra’s way. After Japeth Aguilar made a crucial follow-up to pad the lead up to three points, 82-79, Tenorio made three-of-four attempts from the free throw line to keep Ginebra ahead going into the final play.

San Mig Coffee star James Yap missed a potential game-tying shot at the end.

But Tenorio believes it should not have come to that.

“Hindi kami pwede sumabay sa kanila. Masyado silang composed towards the end pag close game so hindi dapat mangyari yung ganun. Good thing hindi lang pumasok yung tira ni James Yap,” said Tenorio.
