“Wow.”
That was the first reaction of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel star point guard LA Tenorio after learning that he had been named to the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national pool from which coach Chot Reyes will select the Philippine team to compete in the FIBA Asia Championship in August.
Tenorio, who won Most Valuable Player honors when SMART-Gilas won the William Jones Cup last year, said he is honored to be part of a talented guard crew that will comprise the squad.
Apart from him, Talk ‘N Text point men Jayson Castro and Jimmy Alapag were also selected.
“Malaking bagay si Jimmy because of his experience in international competitions. Makakatulong talaga siya,” said Tenorio.
“Si Castro naman, he’s young and very much familiar with Coach Chot’s dribble-drive offense. I think this will be a great guard combination.”
The guard trio will be joined by gunner Gary David of GlobalPort, Larry Fonacier of Talk ‘N Text, and Jeff Chan of Rain or Shine. Talk ‘N Text defensive phenom Ryan Reyes rounds out the backcourt lineup for SMART-Gilas.
“It’s a versatile, up-tempo team,” said Chot Reyes. “We will be using our quickness and outside shooting. We based our decision in choosing players based on our needs.”
