Kings not in the mood to trade Cortez
GINEBRA playmaker Mike Cortez re-joining former college coach Franz Pumaren at Air21 is a far-fetched possibility.
That’s what Kings representative to the PBA Board and San Miguel Corp. basketball operations chief Robert Non said yesterday amid reports Pumaren wants a trade that would send his star point guard at La Salle to the Express.
“I don’t think we will trade,” Non told Malaya-Business Insight yesterday. “Buo na ang team and it’s now simply a matter of peaking at the right time.
“Isa pa, mahirap nang mag-trade pa at this point. Maganda na ang takbo ng team at kung baga sa sinaing iniinin na lang.”
Cortez reportedly tops Pumaren’s wish-list for a point guard, even being quoted as saying it would be “good to have a re-union of sorts” with Cortez. It’s no secret the Express badly need a dependable point guard.
The Express have already undergone some re-tooling after debuting as Shopinas.com and finishing its maiden season in the PBA with a 5-27 win-loss slate, including a 0-14 record in its debut in the Philippine Cup.
Air21 traded for big men Noy Baclao and Rob Reyes from Petron Blaze and KG Canaleta and John Wilson from Ginebra during the off-season, but still needs two more guards to complement Wynne Arboleda, Eric Salamat and Simon Atkins.
Only gunner Ren-Ren Ritualo and center-forward James Sena remain of the old Clickers team with the likes of Mark Isip, Nelbert Omolon, Arboleda and Salamat joining the team in the course of last season.
Ginebra has also undergone some changes, including the acquisition of Elmer Espiritu and the signing of rookies Chris Ellis and Keith Jensen.
The entry of playmaker LA Tenorio pleased Non and the rest of Ginebra officials most.
“LA can alternate with Cortez and Jayjay (Helterbrand) at the No. 1 spot and either of them can also play the two-spot along with Mark (Caguioa),” related Non.
“Kaya nga set na ang team and we will not entertain any trade offers at this time or in the foreseeable future.”
The Kings’ fourth point guard, Rob Labagala, is set to be relegated to the reserve list and is bound to join SMC’s San Miguel Beer team in the Asean Basketball League.

Work out nlng muna nila na mas lalo nilang makuha un magandang CHEMISTRY ng TEAM.
