THE Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) approved on Thursday a seven-player, three-team trade that, by the looks of it, would be benefiting Barangay Ginebra.
Why? Because seven-footer Greg Slaughter could be available in the rookie market in 2013 and under the trade, the Kings snatched the first pick in next year’s Draft from regular trading partner Air21.
And Kings’ coach Siot Tanquingcen hinted just that.
“If he’s there, why not?” Tanquingcen told the BusinessMirror on Thursday. “But the trust really of management is to build for the future. There are other talents who will come out next year. If he’s there, the better.”
Slaughter delayed for a season his desire to turn pro, apparently on the prodding of his Ateneo team, so he could help the Blue Eagles aim for a fifth-straight University Athletic Association of the Philippines crown.
Because of his height and a certain degree of agility that was not seen in another seven-footer EJ Feihl, who has long retired, Slaughter is a cinch as the top rookie pick.
PBA Commissioner Chito Salud approved the deal which saw the Express acquiring big men Noy Baclao and Rob Reyes from Petron and Nino Canaleta and John Wilson from the Kings.
The Boosters got Magi Sison, Paolo Hubalde and Air21’s 2014 second-round pick in return, while Ginebra absorbed Elmer Espiritu and the Express’s first-round pick next year.
But Air21 head coach Franz Pumaren said there is no guarantee Ginebra could tab Slaughter in next year’s draft.
“Are they sure we will finish last this coming season?” said Pumaren, whose team ended up with a worst record in the 37th season, a 5-24, including 0-14 in the Philippine Cup.
“With the players that I now have, I think we can compete against the bigger teams, unlike last year when we can’t even defend the post,” he added. “I think we’ll improve this coming season.”
In Baclao, Reyes and Canaleta, the Express stabilized their frontcourt and got a deadly shooter in Wilson, a former Most Valuable Player in the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
Petron had to release Baclao and Reyes to give room from its latest acquisitions, 6-foot-11 June Mar Fajardo and Alex Mallari, the No. 1 and 3 picks, respectively, in the Draft on Sunday.
