Do-or-Die Monday: Rain or Shine, Ginebra battle for semifinal ticket

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and Rain or Shine battle one final time in the Commissioner’s Cup on Monday with a seat in the semifinals on the line.

The Gin Kings and the Elasto Painters mix it up at 6:45 p.m. at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum in what is expected to be another intense battle.

Ginebra forced the do-or-die matchup with a 90-83 victory last Saturday that saw the Gin Kings rally from a double-digit first half deficit. 2009 PBA Most Valuable Player Jayjay Helterbrand turned in a vintage performance, scoring all 13 of his points in the fourth quarter.

“Jayjay and Kerby (Raymundo) stepped up for us while (Josh) Urbiztondo and Vernon Macklin did their job. But on this game, I’m giving it to Jayjay. I’m happy yung kumpiyansa niya bumalik na,” said Ginebra coach Alfrancis Chua.

Rain or Shine enjoys a twice-to-beat advantage in the series. Despite losing the opening match, Elasto Painters coach Yeng Guiao remained confident about his team’s chances to make the semifinals for the fifth time in the last six conferences.

“The reason why you strive for a twice-to-beat is that you can make mistakes and correct on those mistakes. We will correct it tomorrow (Sunday) and apply it on Monday,” he said.

The winner of the match will face Talk ‘N Text in a best-of-five semifinal series. The Tropang Texters booked their semis seat with a sweep of Petron in their quarterfinals series Sunday.
