Caguioa rules: 2012 PBA Commissioner Cup Power Rankings (Start to March 4, 2012)
Boo to procrastination, huh.
I was checking out the team
standings and I’m amazed that the 2012
PBA Commissioner’s Cup is technically in the middle of the conference. With
nine games to be contested in the elimination period, we might have seen the
last of Meralco, Barako Bull, and
possibly Air21.
Fortunately for Air21, whatever
happens to the rest of their games, this is bar none the best conference of
their season.
Anyway, this list should please
a lot of readers because most of the players in the list are the usual fan
faves. But then again, check out the shock in your faces when you see the other
names on the top of the food chain.
Anyway, here are the best of
the current conference.
Game starts now!
20 – KINGS / RUDY HATFIELD
STATS: 6.7PPG • 9.0RPG • 1.7APG • 1.3SPG
He comes out of retirement,
goes back in, comes back out, and for some reason, his intensity is always
there! If there’s one person SMC needs to lock for three years until his talent
rots, he’s that guy.
19 – LLAMADOS / JOE
DEVANCE
STATS: 14.0PPG • 4.6RPG • 1.6APG
Wow. And here I am thinking
that Joe Devance will have a wonderful time taking over Kerby Raymundo’s
production. Well, JDV’s numbers improved from last conference. If you’re
looking for Joe Devance numbers from last season? Well… that’s still a work in
progress.
18 – LLAMADOS / JAMES YAP
STATS: 13.0PPG • 3.2RPG • 3.8APG
Denzel Bowles is a phenomenal
import. In some ways, his presence destroys King James’ scoring production. But
if there’s one good thing about James Yap – is that when he adapts to a
scenario – he tries hard to excel on it. And with his minutes, he’ll likely
produce his usual numbers.
17 – KINGS / JAYJAY
HELTERBRAND
STATS: 9.8PPG • 3.3RPG • 6.3APG • 1.0SPG
The missile-dropping,
ball-dishing blur is back and it seems he’ll stay here for a while. After a
great All-Filipino Cup, Helterbrand went nuts on the competition and wished
them luck because they’ll need it. He ranks first in his team in minutes and
assists.
16 – ACES / SONNY THOSS
STATS: 10.0PPG • 9.0RPG • 1.4APG • 0.8BPG
The Boss’ numbers are down but
that’s understandable considering that this is a big import conference.
Besides, Thoss’ numbers are still near double-double numbers and I can see
those stats move up if Alaska wants to shore up their semifinal chances.
15 – ELASTO PAINTERS /
GABE NORWOOD
STATS: 8.4PPG • 7.0RPG • 3.8APG • 1.2SPG
After a final four stint, the
Elasto Painters returned to obscurity with a slim chance to advance in the next
round. Gabe Norwood is still not getting the offensive numbers but his other
stats are in the zone.
14 – TROPANG TEXTERS /
RANIDEL DE OCAMPO
STATS: 15.7PPG • 5.3RPG • 2.7APG
Ranidel De Ocampo is still a
solid mark as far as inside and outside offensive production is concern. His
current game is one of the reasons why Japeth Aguilar is getting benched and I
believe as long as he plays with high standard, it’s going to stay that way.
13 – ENERGY / WILLIE
MILLER
STATS: 17.8PPG • 4.4RPG • 3.0APG
I think the problem Barako Bull
is facing is that they cured the lack of a healthy Danny Seigle by bringing in
Ronald Tubid but disrupted their offense by sending Dylan Ababou away.
Regardless of how well Miller plays, I don’t know if he and Rodney White can
push their buttons to the top.
12 – TROPANG TEXTERS /
KELLY WILLIAMS
STATS: 14.0PPG • 9.7RPG • 0.7APG • 0.7BPG
Machine Gun Kelly continues to
work the TNT rotation with his superb offense-defense capabilities and his almost
double-double game. He was one of the prime reasons why the loss of Omar Sahman
didn’t do much harm to their win-loss record.
11 – BLAZE BOOSTERS / ALEX
CABAGNOT
STATS: 14.8PPG • 1.6RPG • 7.4APG
A-Cab will probably lead the
league in assists this season. If the league also has a stat with regards to
clutch baskets during crunch time, he’ll probably lead that too (although the
Bandanna Brothers are trying their best to unseat him). Petron still needs to
fill in the void left by Jay Washington and Dondon Hontiveros but Alex Cabagnot
is doing his best to fill in the void.
10 – ACES / CYRUS BAGUIO
STATS: 20.6PPG • 2.8RPG • 3.6APG • 1.0SPG
I wonder why this version of
Cyrus Baguio is nonexistent back when they were struggling in the All-Filipino Cup.
Anyway, it’s like we’re treated to a nostalgia bit when Baguio was leading Red
Bull and he had Adam Parada on his side and in some ways, it’s like when he was
in UST playing with Nino Gelig.
9 – TIGERS / GARY DAVID
STATS: 27.3PPG • 2.5RPG • 1.3APG
“David” is pronounced like Ben
David and not like Craig David. This is to let our foreign folks know that Gary
David is not an import (although I doubt if the foreign folk know who the late
Ben David is). But why is he low? While his points are high the other aspects
of his game are lacking.
8 – TIGERS / MARCIO
LASSITER
STATS: 16.5PPG • 6.5RPG • 3.0APG • 1.8SPG
The all-around goodness that Marcio
Lassiter brings is very vital for Powerade. Sure, the Tigers are suffering at
the moment but who knows how they’ll end up if the trade that involved Nonoy
Baclao and Rey Guevarra really happened?
7 – BOLTS / MACMAC
CARDONA
STATS: 21.0PPG • 6.6RPG • 2.0APG • 0.8SPG
There are four locals in the PBA
right now that are average 20 points and more and Captain Hook is one of them.
Cardona is a usual suspect to accomplish such feat but last conference was a
downer for him. He is doing well in the Commish Cup though.
6 – TROPANG TEXTERS /
JAYSON CASTRO
STATS: 18.3PPG • 4.0RPG • 4.0APG • 1.7SPG
Just like last conference,
Jayson Castro is again a prominent figure in Chot Reyes’ system. The former
Singapore Slinger is in some ways a nuisance for Jimmy Alapag because his
continuing presence is making it difficult for him to defend his MVP title. His
growth though enables them to win a grand slam so for a team player like Jimmy…
what the hell, right?
5 – ACES / LA TENORIO
STATS: 17.4PPG • 4.6RPG • 6.2APG • 0.8SPG
Alaska is back to its regular
winning form and LA Tenorio is pulling all stops. There are rumors with regards
to his stay with the Aces but at this point of his career, he needs to pad up
his stats and Alaska is giving him the avenue to do so.
4 – BOLTS / CHRIS ROSS
STATS: 8.2PPG • 5.2RPG • 9.6APG • 2.6SPG
Yes. Yes… yes… yes. Chris Ross
is Entry Number 4 and people should deal with this. The guy doesn’t produce
Macmac Cardona offensive numbers but he hands out a monster production in
assists and steals. Actually Ross leads the conference in assists and steals.
3 – TIGERS / JV CASIO
STATS: 15.8PPG • 3.8RPG • 8.8APG
Shocked? Well if Entry Number 4
failed to move you, then this could be the kicker. Upstaging the all-around
goodness of Marcio Lassiter and the scoring barrage of Gary David is hard but
have you seen Casio’s numbers? The guy is fourth in his team in minutes and he
is making the most out of it.
2 – BLAZE BOOSTERS /
ARWIND SANTOS
STATS: 13.2PPG • 10.8RPG • 1.4APG • 0.8SPG • 2.6BPG
It took one game for Arwind
Santos to break out of his scoring slump… and the Petron faithful welcomed this
development with open arms. His 34 points was enough to boom his average back
to its usual double-double goodness.
1 – KINGS / MARK CAGUIOA
STATS: 21.5PPG • 9.8RPG • 1.8APG • 1.0SPG
I heard people dissing my
All-Filipino list because there was no Ginebra representation in it. Fact, the
Kings just didn’t nail it. But it’s a different story now, especially with the
sudden surge of Ginebra’s old reliable. Mark Caguioa is dominant this
conference and Siot Tanquingcen is not limiting his minutes. He is almost
averaging in double-doubles.
By the way for those not in the
know, I am still using PBFantasy
criterion. This is a tried and tested formula where the stat-grabbing is an
essential tool and this discourages a player for merely shooting the ball in
the rim.
Anyway in two weeks time I will
update this list. The first round has probably ended at that point. So wins
will probably matter the next time I write this.
Game over!
