DUBAI -- Though barely beating an import-less Barako Bull side Thursday night, the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters hope to draw encouragement from that triumph as they take on the Barangay Ginebra Kings in the second game of the PBA Dubai sojourn Friday.
“We scrambled to get past Barako minus their import. But a win is a win, and we’ll get energy from that,” said Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao.
A big crowd is expected at the Al-Shabab Sports Club as the two teams meet in a grudge match following their quarterfinals showdown in the recent Philippine Cup.
The game is set at 7 p.m. (11 p.m. in Manila).
“The videos of our all-Filipino quarterfinals duels serve as our scouting report. Doon kami magbabase ng preparation. Of course, we know Chris Alexander,” said Guiao.
“Entirely different ang preparasyon namin against Barako at sa Ginebra since Dermarr Johnson is more of a perimeter player while Alexander is a post presence,” Guiao added.
The Elasto Painters gained a big break as Johnson was helped to the bench just seven minutes into the game and never returned to the floor again Thursday.
Nonetheless, Rain or Shine walked the tightrope before pulling off a 99-95 win, the team’s first in three starts in the mid-season Commissioner’s Cup. The question is whether the Elasto Painters still have the energy playing a second game for the second straight night against the Kings.
“May advantage ang Ginebra since they’re rested and able to scout us. Pero tingin ko naman may laman pa ang tangke namin. We’ll see,” said Guiao. Indeed, the Kings are well rested and must be aching to set out for the battle against the team that eased them out in the last conference.
“It’s a privilege for us to go out of the country and play in front of our kababayans.
Hopefully, we could come home with a win to make this trip extra special,” said coach Siot Tanquingcen whose team has never played since being nipped by the Alaska Milk Aces, 74-76, in Lucena Saturday.
The Kings debuted in the tourney with an 84-82 nail-biter over the Petron Blaze Booster on a tough buzzer-beating shot by Jayjay Helterbrand on Feb. 12. (SB)
