THERE was no vibrancy needed for coach Yeng Guiao this time, and Rain or Shine required no late-game rally.
All that was necessary was a superb first half, and everything fell into place the rest of the way.
Rain or Shine and Guiao, after seasons of wait, are going back to the semi-finals.
The Elasto Painters swept the Ginebra Gin Kings in their quarter-final round series last night, performing all that was necessary in a clinching game for a 106-91 win to arrange a semi-finals duel with Powerade in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.
The Painters won the best-of-three duel, 2-0, finishing off the ageing, injury-hit Kings with an impressive shooting from the floor in the opening quarter before getting everybody involved on both offense and defense in the second half.
Rain or Shine won Game One, 112-105, in overtime behind a remarkable rally from a 17-point deficit with 9:18 left to play in regulation and then outplayed the Kings in the extra period. This time, the Painters bamboozled the Kings right from the very start, and never got threatened seriously as Ginebra only was able to come to within 13 points in the third quarter.
This is the first time that the Painters will make a semi-final round appearance since the franchise, backstopped by import Jai Lewis, made it to the Final Four in the 2008-09 Fiesta Conference.
It will also mark the return of Guiao into the semis. Guiao holds the record for most consecutive stints in the semi-finals when he was still with Barako Bull, steering the ball club to eight straight appearances, the last coming in the 2007-08 Fiesta Conference.
“Our main objective really was to double-team their (Kings) guards and see what happens,” Guiao said. “Defensively our game plan worked. Our offense just takes care of itself. We had a good shooting night tonight, and I just asked the boys to shoot with confidence.
“It was just a big challenge facing Ginebra in the quarter-finals. But they had a stroke of bad luck and they’ve been hounded with injuries.”
Rain or Shine thus has set-up an unlikely best-of-seven semi-finals showdown with Powerade, which upset top-ranked B-Meg.
“I’m looking at it really as a good sign for a young team,” Guiao said, referring to the growth of the Painters. “That’s something we really need to bring against Powerade. We really need to prepare against Powerade. They (Tigers) really deserve to be in the semis. They were the underdogs and they beat the odds. We will be very careful with our chances with Powerade. They are just as strong as any other team.”
Jeff Chan scored 22 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the field and had five assists for the Painters, while Ronjay Buenafe and Ronnie Matias came off the bench to combine for 25 points.
Ginebra came into the match facing a must-win, and it tried to salvage the series by letting Jay-Jay Helterband, who missed the Kings’ last five games due to a hamstring injury, and Ronald Tubid (right calf strain) play to add experience and long-court threat.
But the addition of the two veterans hardly mattered. They were fielded when the Painters already had control of the match.
Unlike in Game One where they merely scored 33 points in the first two quarters and 56 in three, the Painters were sizzling right from the get-go. They shot an unbelievable 81 percent in the first period where Rain or Shine scattered 41 points for a 17-point lead.
The Painters even led by as many as 24 in the second period, 55-31, on a point-blank, wide-open shot by Jervy Cruz, a reflection of how awfulGinebra’s defense was and its lack of urgency in the first half.
Rain or Shine led, 58-37, at the break on 68 percent shooting from the floor. The Painters also shot 6-of-10 from three-point range and held Mark Caguioa to only four points.
The best that the Kings could come to was at 63-50 in the third quarter.
The scores
Rain or Shine (106) -- Chan 22, Buenafe 13, Matias 12, Belga 12, Arana 11, Norwood 9, Quinahan 9, Lee 8, Rodriguez 6, Cruz 4, Tang 0.
Ginebra (91) -- Cortez 17, Canaleta 13, Intal 12, Caguioa 11, Mamaril 10, Labagala 8, Villanueva 8, W. Wilson 6, Helterbrand 6, Tubid 0.
Quarterscores: 41-24, 58-37, 78-61, 106-91.

Re: Painters sweep Kings

Re: Painters sweep Kings
^^pre actually kaya naman talaga natin ang ROS eh.. ang nakikita ko sa lahat ng game nila based on my analysis lang pre ah, 1st game isa nagulat yao kay LEE... 2nd meeting is hindi natin nacontain ang lamang up to end and last meeting is nawala yung Depensa natin at nawala yung laro... I mean kung ano ang kinaswerte natin sa tres nung 1st game sa semis ay ganun naman kinamalas last game...
