Agustin admits 'coaching lapse,' regrets not using Jay-R Reyes in Game Three
With veteran center Billy Mamaril playing well off the bench behind Greg Slaughter and Japeth Aguilar, Ginebra coach Ato Agustin decided to stick with a three-man rotation in the frontline and sit out Jay-R Reyes - a decision he ended up regretting after the Game Three loss. Jerome Ascano
BARANGAY Ginebra coach Ato Agustin admitted his decision not to use big man Jay-Ar Reyes backfired on the team in an 89-97 loss to San Mig in Game Three on Sunday night.
With veteran center Billy Mamaril playing well off the bench behind Greg Slaughter and Japeth Aguilar, Agustin decided to stick with the three-man rotation in the frontline for the rest of the game.
Slaughter, however, ended up playing for 41 minutes and ran out of gas in the final stretch, scoring no more than four points in the fourth quarter after coming away with 25 in the first three.
“Siguro kinapos mga big men namin especially Greg. Eh yun nga, si Jay-Ar di ko nagamit, kasi maganda yung nilalaro ni Billy (Mamaril)," Agustin said shortly after the team emerged from the dugout of the Mall of Asia Arena.
Agustin ended up regretting not fielding in Reyes, but explained that Mamaril was doing well defensively putting a body on bruising forward Marc Pingris and San Mig's other big men.
The 6-7 Reyes, acquired during the offseason from Meralco in exchange for Kerby Raymundo, averaged 6.5 points and 5.5 rebounds during the first two games of the series.
Agustin vowed to take note of their mistake as the Kings go back to the drawing board and see what adjustments they need to make in order to avoid falling into a 3-1 hole come Wednesday in Game Four.
