After early beating, Mark Caguioa believes Ginebra can pull off FPJ-style comeback vs Alaska

In classic Fernando Poe, Jr. movies, the hero often gets beaten up by the bad guys early in the story, only to prevail in the end.

After Barangay Ginebra San Miguel suffered a beating in Game One of the Commissioner’s Cup finals against Alaska, superstar guard Mark Caguioa believes the Gin Kings can pull off the same trick against the Aces.

“Mas gusto ko yung natatalo sa una,” Caguioa said shortly after Ginebra dropped the series opener, 87-70. The reigning Most Valuable Player saw action unexpectedly with the team trailing behind big in the opening half.

The Gin Kings would have to win the three of the next four games to win the championship, a prospect that doesn’t faze Caguioa.

“I’ve been in the league the past 12 years, and mas magandang sa una ka natatalo because you have the sense of urgency to come back.”

Ginebra is no stranger to comebacks, having started the tournament with four straight losses. The Gin Kings also had to win four do-or-die games to book their finals ticket.

“Yung 0-4 nga nakabalik kami, ano pa yung 0-1. I wouldn’t be worried about the team.”

Caguioa believes the team’s trademark spirit would be enough to carry it through.

“Para saan pa at never-say-die kami?”
