Game Two of the Commissioner’s Cup finals between the Alaska Aces and Barangay Ginebra San Miguel saw physicality turn up a notch as the two teams engaged in a heated battle.
Things got chippy in the second quarter, as the teams exchange several hard fouls, including a flagrant foul on Ginebra forward Mac Baracael for hitting Alaska rookie Calvin Abueva.
The Aces had the last laugh, however, as they outscored Ginebra, 29-14, in that second period, when the Gin Kings seemed to lose poise as the game started getting more physical.
“We knew it was gonna be physical. I thought we handled it better,” said Alaska coach Luigi Trillo, who lauded his players including Abueva for not complaining to referees about calls and playing through the contact.
Ginebra superstar guard Mark Caguioa, meanwhile, challenged his teammates to be the aggressor with their backs against the wall, as Alaska has a chance to close out the series in Sunday’s Game Three.
“You can’t give and-one fouls. Kapag pa-foul ka, you need to foul hard. It’s part of the playoffs,” he said, adding that the Gin Kings need to be tougher on the defensive end.
“We need to improve on our defense. Kung paano kami nakarating ng championship was because of our defense, hindi yung dedepensa lang kami kapag tambak na kami. We need to play good defense for the whole 48 minutes.”

focus on the game....have fun, forget Abueva, he is a thing of the past even at this point of his prime for his attitude; defend and shot...play for the sake of playing but don't lose your heart, it is that part of our system that motivates us to do more despite falling 0-2; we are at your backs....never-say-die...go go go Gins!!!
