SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST
BARANGAY Ginebra has gone through three do-or-die games thus far in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup and survived.
For coach Alfrancis Chua, nothing has changed for his Kings.
“Ganu’n pa rin, buhay pa rin ng team ang nakasalalay,” said Chua, referring to his squad’s deciding match with Talk N Text Sunday for one of the mid-season tourney’s finals slots at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
“Kapag inisip kasi naming we’ve already accomplished anything by coming this far, walang mangyayari sa amin,” he added. “Kailangan ang attitude pa rin namin, patay kung patay.”
That mind-set, which tided Ginebra over twice-to-beat Rain or Shine in the quarterfinals, should be translated into game once again.
Indeed, Sunday’s match should be one no-holds-barred affair, gauging on the best-of-five semifinal duel’s Game 4 last Friday.
Ginebra managed to come out on top of a 104-101 decision following a highly-physical, rugged match that prompted both camps to accuse each other of employing dirty tactics on their respective imports.
Chua claimed Vernon Macklin was punched, hit in the groin area and even head-butted in several instances not seen by the game officials, forcing the import to finally react by shoving TNT’s Ranidel de Ocampo to the floor in the third period.
“Those are cheap shots,” said Chua.
Some Tropang Texters officials were not so blunt, but basically expressed the same things being done on import Tony Mitchell.
“Akala ko, basketball ang laro. Mixed martial arts pala,” said Ricky Vargas, TNT representative to the PBA Board.
“They were grabbing, holding, shoving Tony,” said another Texters team official.
League officials have indeed reviewed the game tapes and sanctions on the erring players are surely forthcoming, as are the tactics which are simply part of playoffs basketball.
Macklin managed to rise above the physicality and his F1 for the shove, finishing with a career-high 37 points on top of 12 rebounds while the likes of Jayjay Helterbrand, LA Tenorio, Chris Ellis and Kerby Raymundo gave significant contributions.
Mitchell also almost succeeded with a gamehigh 45 points and 11 rebounds, but only De Ocampo was the lone other TNT player in double figures with 12, stressing the need for the other locals to step up.
Outside shooting should prove to be a major factor, especially for Ginebra, since it would help prevent TNT from zoning up on Macklin.
Chua insists on attitude above everything else.
