Alfrancis Chua pays tribute to big hearts of Ginebra players for winning streak

After his team’s heart-stopping victory over Meralco on Sunday, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel coach Alfrancis Chua addressed comments by Bolts coach Ryan Gregorio about stopping the Gin Kings, which the former described as “mind games.”

Chua couldn’t resist poking fun at his players.

“Buti yung ibang player namin walang isip, kaya hindi naisip yung sinasabi niya,” said Chua in jest. “Walang effect.”

Turning serious, the coach said the players deserve all the credit for the team’s winning run, which now stands at six games. Amazingly, the team has won the last three despite missing reigning Most Valuable Player Mark Caguioa to a knee injury.

“I want all the viewers to know that this one’s from the boys,” said Chua. “Sa tinagal-tagal kong nagco-coach, wala pa akong team na ganito maglaro.

“Grabe yung ginawa ng players, six straight.”

Chua noted how he had to dig deep into his bench because of all the injuries to his squad, using little-used forward Keith Jensen as a defensive stopper and fielding in injured Rico Maierhofer in the final play to bother Meralco’s inbounder with 1.2 seconds left in the game.

“Ang Ginebra team talaga, hindi sumusuko.”

Even then, Chua couldn’t resist making another joke about his players.

“Ipapasok ko sana si [Yousef] Taha, kaya lang baka makuha yung bola, tapos i-shoot.”
