Gin Kings to step up defense in Caguioa's absence
MANILA – Barangay Ginebra is expected to rely on its vaunted defense when it seeks revenge against Air21 on Wednesday at the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
The Gin Kings will again be playing minus injured Mark Caguioa but are confident that they can weather the Express even without “The Spark.”
“Defense is still the key. That’s the main reason why we have won four straight and the entire team agrees with me,” said Ginebra coach Alfrancis Chua in the PBA website.
The Gin Kings plan to avenge its 70-74 defeat to the Express while extending their run to a fifth straight.
“If we can keep up ‘yung aggressiveness namin sa defense, ‘yung offense namin darating at darating,” said Chua.
He added that his remaining players will have to step up in Caguioa’s absence.
“It’s time to work even harder,” said Chua. “As I’ve said before, kailangan lahat tulong-tulong para ma-fill up iyung kawalan ni Mark.”
Air21 coach Franz Pumaren, meantime, emphasized the need to sweep their remaining assignments after his squad lost to Rain or Shine, 83-94, last Sunday.
They’ll have to beat Barangay Ginebra, Petron Blaze and San Mig Coffee to make it to the quarterfinals.
“We must do a better job with our execution, offensively and defensively,” said Pumaren.
