Pido Jarencio set to step down as UST coach as PBA head-coaching job beckons
PIDO Jarencio is stepping down as coach of University of Santo Tomas after a season in which he led the Tigers to a runner-up finish in the UAAP and a first-ever Philippine Collegiate Champions League title.
According to multiple sources, Jarencio has already tendered his resignation to school officials two weeks ago and will most likely take on a head-coaching job in the PBA before the Commissioner's Cup comes around.
Sought for comment, the colorful coach confirmed that he is mulling over his departure from a UST team he led to one championship, two Finals appearances, and five Final Four stints in seven seasons in charge, but remained coy about his plans.
“Hindi pa naman ako nakakapag-decide pero siguro second week of January. Dun tayo magde-decide kung ano ang future natin at kung saan tayo pupunta," said the former PBA gunner.
Asked to elaborate, he added: “Syempre, pitong taon na tayo run, baka sabihin naman ng iba masyado na tayong swapang. Saka maganda na ang accomplishment natin dun. Naayos ko na yung team. Solid na yun kaya kahit sino umupo dun okay na.”
Jarencio declined to reveal his possible destination. "Basta, sasabihin ko na lang pag okay na. Pero definitely, sa PBA yun,” said the outspoken coach, currently an assistant at Petron and the San Miguel Beermen in the ABL.
Multiple sources, however, have confirmed that Jarencio is being eyed as the next coach of Barako Bull to take over from interim coach Bong Ramos.
If Jarencio's move pushes through, it would mean the two coaches who squared off in the last UAAP Finals will be gone by the time the next collegiate season comes around and would be renewing their rivalry in the pro league.
Norman Black has left Ateneo to coach Talk 'N Text in the pro league after leading the Blue Eagles to a fifth successive championship.
Jarencio admitted he has prepared for a transition at UST, recommending a couple of former assistants for the job of handling an almost intact Tigers team that should be one of the pre-tournament favorites next season.
Sources said he has backed Estong Ballesteros and Senen Duenas - a report Jarencio declined to confirm or deny.

What won it for ADMU is the coaching. Sobrang laki ng difference ni Norman Black and Pido Jarencio. Tapos gugustohin niyo pa na maging head coach si Pido? Dahil ba sa "Lahing Ginebra"? Dahil ba "motivator" siya na coach?
I'd rather have a San Miguel guy and an X's and O's coach like Jong Uichico than a "Lahing Ginebra" and motivator guy but still very raw to be a head coach like Pido Jarencio.
At least noong time ni Jong, we're almost sure of a semifinals seat. Ngayon pahirapan talaga na mag-semis eh.
I can't believe the number of Ginebra fans clamoring for Alfrancis Chua to replace Siot Tanquingcen. For what? Dahil bagay ang "angas" niya sa Ginebra? Fit ang run and gun, high-octane offense niya sa Gin Kings? Siguro naman you know his track record in Tanduay and Sta. Lucia. That ponytail guy is no better than Siot.

Coach Pido is on his way for a training in the biggest league in the Phils.. Still hoping na mahasa sya sa Barako Bull and sooner malipat sa Ginebra.. Iba parin ang trained ni Coach Jawo dba About Alfrancis.. Its also a No-NO for me.. Ewan ko.. basta! haha

This is possible. I assume some (or many) of you are aware of the chatter around the league that Barako is also owned by the San Miguel Corp. Maybe the powers that be in SMC would like to see first how Pido will fare as head coach. And if he performs well, maybe they'll "pirate" him and put him in Ginebra.skyscraper wrote:Coach Pido is on his way for a training in the biggest league in the Phils.. Subukan? Hindi ba ganyan din ang ginawa ng management when they reinstated Coach Siot as the head coach of Ginebra - at the expense of Jong Uichico. Anyare?betterhalf wrote: bat di muna naten subukan bago tayo magsalita
