My Best Player of the Game

Ginebra won with a sterling performance and used its old tactic but well known true strength which is "constricting defense". Best plays were shown, best remarks were given. All of the scrutiny eyes are looking for the old names to be called for the best player of the game. For the first time of my self proclaimed game analyst career, I failed to guess the best player of that game. I'm actually observing him the whole game and I was impressed for his heroic performance. But still it was not him who was chosen in favor of the teams court general which is LA Tenorio.

Yes the team won in terms of team work. We have Big Mama whos scorching hands made the opening salvos of shots which gave the whole early lead of the team( which they carried until the end of the game). Kerby Raymundo showed resurgence in killing the San Mig suffocating defense by hammering away his signature perimeter shots. We also have Rico Maierhoffer who collared the offensive rebounds to gave his team a second chance for the score. We also have Little Robie Labagala who even failed to give significant scores, but provided LA a long rest in order to keep the main point guard fresh to sustain the long and scary ginebra attack. Vmack is also there to provide jaw dropping dunks and alley hoops to keep the crowd entertained and carry the team into the energetic finish. And who will forget LA? the best player of the game? And the only heart and soul of the whole team which is Caguioa who fearlessly fought the San Mig last ditch effort during the crucial 4th quarter?

Its a good game but the observers failed to notice the lone airforce Ellis. Chris gave mere numbers for his stats ( 11 points am I right?) not enough to impress the commentators. But they forgot what the Airforce did to help his team. Let me discuss it but to the LA fans and my beloved kabarangay... dont get me wrong:


1. Ellis is switching from man to man into zone defense on his own. He is guarding Joe Devance and James Yap. When Mark is unable to contained Yap, Ellis was ordered by Coach Chua to guard the man with a million steps este moves.

2. Ellis was able to shut down James Yap. Coach Tim Cone were forced to remove James from the court because of glue like defense of Ellis. The great athleticism of the Airforce enabled him to get pass to multiple screens of San Mig in Yap is below average after the game because of him.

3. When Coach Tim Cone used Mallari to create mismatch for LA, Ellis guarded him. Because of that switch, the Barroca and PJ Simon tandem was eliminated because PJ simmon was left being guarded by Caguioa or Raymundo or much worst Vmack.( Do I also need to discussed the one handed jam of the airforce against Mallari?)

4. Ellis provided a problem without solution to Tim Cone in terms of mismatch. The triangle offense and defense system of San Mig did not work because of Ellis disrupting defense. ( FYI... Triangle offense and defense is a basketball tactic which is utilising mismatches and ball rotating passes. It is orchestrated by the point guard with the help of screening teammate to create open looks which is usualy James Yap, PJ Simon or Joe Devance). Ellis destroyed the whole San Mig game plan from starting to finish.

5. Ellis blocked the easy lay up of Pj Simon. It is a common shot block but it killed Pj's confidence (as far as I remeber, Pj failed to give significant presence in the court after that block).

6. Last but not the least. When San Mig created a huge run that cut the Ginebra lead into 5 with around 30 seconds left, Ellis made a fast break lay up from Vmack. That score served as the winning shot because it made the lead a three possesion game against San Mig which is also beyond rescue for them.


I'm not removing the credit and recognition for LA. He deserved it. I'm just feeling sorry but proud for Ellis. Its sound like bias but for me, Ellis deserve the recognition as well. Remember guys of Ellis promise after they lost to ROS, for me he just fulfilled it last game. And I am pretty sure that a Ginebra with a player like Chris Ellis, they are secured.

Thanks... may ilang mali dyan sa sobrang observation ko kay Ellis. James Yap was able to break 20 points.. na limit sya ni ellis sa single digit nung 1st quarter kaya ko na sabi na na shut down sya ni airforce

Actually kahit si Billy Mams pwedeng maging Best Player that time isipin mo perfect sha sa FG diba, tas naka double digit score din sha kung di lang sha nafoul out at nagtuloy tuloy pa yung scoring nya nung 4th qtr, para saken sha ang dapat naging BPG that time
