Macklin bound for Manila, but won't make it in time for Sunday game against Petron
Vernon Macklin posted this photo of himself, supposedly in the airport, on his Instagram account.
NEW import Vernon Macklin is set to arrive on Monday to take over from Herbert Hill as Barangay Ginebra's reinforcement in the PBA Commissioner's Cup.
The former Detroit Piston got Ginebra fans excited when he posted a photo of him in the airport on his Twitter account on Friday (Manila time), raising hope that he can arrive in time to suit up in the Kings' game against Petron on Sunday.
However, a check conducted by Spin.ph showed the hard-banging big man from NBA D-League side Rio Grande Valley Vipers won't board his flight to Manila until Sunday afternoon.
According to sources, Macklin was set to go to Texas to tend to some personal matters on Friday before flying to San Francisco where he will board the inter-continental flight to Manila.
The 6-10 power forward, described as an inside operator who doesn't shy away from contact in the paint, is expected to arrive on Monday morning and join his first practice with the Kings on Tuesday.
He is expected to make his debut in a road game against Alaska Milk in Tubod, Lanao del Norte on February 23.

unless his improvement is significant when it comes to FT percentage, and rebounding, i dont think we can really rely on Macklin to bring the intensity of ginebra's game back on both ends...he averaged .607 on fts and 5.6 RPG... 0.9 blocks a game -- with the height and skillset of D-League players this may be acceptable, but not for FTs and Rebounding... you got to be able to shoot that ball at least 75% of the time on the line specially when you operate inside and if you are aggressive. rebounding on the other hand is not only about height. its about the decipline and attitude of wanting to grab the ball more than your opponents... good possistioning and sacrificing your body... i hope im wrong but i dont think he is the one that will cary ginebra back to the promise land. we need a MONSTER REBOUNDER... not a scorer... deffensive rebounds stop the other team to score 2nd chances points and off rebounds allow your team to get more chances to score.. and will also boost the confidence of your shooter to shoot from the outside because they dont need to worry if the miss... thats what made CA44 the best fit for GINEBRA when the got their last ring... MC47, JJ13 and the other shooters back then were not scared nor thinking twice to take a shot from the outside... HH15? i dont know... no disrepect for the guy but he just cant grab that ball... outrebounded and outhassled one too many... Aguilar and their import made HILL looked pathetic... i am no good ball player not even close to average... but at least when the loose ball is within 3 - 4ft away from me, id get it most of the time... there's just no excuse for Hill this time... pressure to perform is not an excuse.. everytime you get paid to do something, there should always be that pressure to perform...the only remaining reason why ginebra is playing HILL is for that reason... trying to make him work for the money he got paid.

Amen! But If Macklin won't meet the coaching staff's expectation (and the GSM fans' expectation as well), we can still negotiate with DJ Mbenga (IF he is still interested).

Re: Macklin bound for Manila, but won't make it in time for Sunday game against Petron
It doesnt matter who the import will be... as long as expectations were set right... GINEBRA management /coaching staff can never control the expectations of their fans (including mine)... what they can control is the expecations they will set for both their local players and their import...
I cannot stress this any HARDER... WE DON'T NEED A GO-To-GUY for an import... (we already have MC47) we need a REBOUNDER... someone who's not scared to bang bodies with anyone in the league... His scores should come from PUT-BACKS (it's where CA44 earned most of his points back then) and at least 75% of his free throws. someone with a decent post up move so he can draw double team and kick out to spot up shooters... (does not need to be a 3pointer)...
GINEBRA locals should not rely on the Import no matter how good or bad he may be... sadly, big factor, if not the bigest factor, that contributed to their 2nd loss is the fact that our locals have the idea that HILL will explode and will redeem himself -- if they will not win, its all on Hill... surely taking the blame after a loss sounds noble but we dont need any explanation... its better that you give your all and lose than lossing without even trying... i saw some glimpse of HBOMB doing better than HILL on rebounding last game, but was not as consistent as expected...
we can blab all day and as long as we want but enough said...
in the end, if we (by we i mean GINEBRA players) don't have the right attitude, we will NEVER WIN a ring again... we have to find it within us to sport the same attitude that made tons of GINEBRA faithfuls fall in love with the TEAM we all call OUR OWN... NEVER SAY DIE!!!
