MANILA, Philippines - Barangay Ginebra's Mike Cortez took home the PBA's Player of the Week honors for only the second time since 2006, after helping his team to two victories this past week.
According to PBA.ph, it is only Cortez's 2nd Player of the Week award since nabbing the plum in the week of January 2-8 in the 2006 Fiesta Conference.
Cortez averaged 17 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 blocks
in two games this past week, both of which were victories for the Kings.
Ginebra ended the PBA Philippine Cup elimination round with
victories over the Barako Bull Energy and the Talk N Text Tropang Texters.
"Mike has always been a good player," Ginebra head coach Siot
Tanquingcen said of Cortez, a former La Salle standout. "I think he's
back playing comfortably with his teammates, and he is being
aggressive, which is good for him because he has the capability to make
an impact in the game."
Cortez made his presence felt at the crucial moments of the games,
especially when he canned 2 3-pointers and handed out 4 assists in the
vital fourth quarter against TNT, which allowed Ginebra to pull away.
The Kings will now face a tough challenge in the quarterfinals, where
they match up against a dangerous Rain or Shine team led by rookie Paul Lee.
