MANILA, Philippines – Barangay Ginebra's star guard Mark Caguioa was named the Best Player of the Conference (BPC) in the PBA Commissioner's Cup, beating out Powerade gunner Gary David in a close contest.
According to PBA.ph, Caguioa accumulated a total of 1,085 points from the media, his fellow players and the PBA, while David finished with a total of 900 points.
David actually topped the statistical race with 448 points to Caguioa's 403, but the Ginebra guard had more media votes (418), player votes (114) and PBA votes (150). David had 327 media votes, 50 player votes and 75 PBA votes.
"I would have given it to David," Caguioa said. "Grabe ang inilalaro n'ya. He's really working hard."
Caguioa did not play in the post-season after sustaining an eye injury, but his excellent performance in the elimination round was enough to secure him the BPC award.
Even his closest rival, David, felt Caguioa deserved the conference's top honors.
"Nakita naman natin ang impact n’ya. Noong nawala siya, na-out sila," David said.
Ginebra made it to the semi-finals outright but lost in four games against the B-Meg Llamados. David, meanwhile, was unable to lead Powerade to the playoffs.
It is Caguioa's second BPC award in his career, having won the honors in the 2006 Philippine Cup as well.
Meanwhile, B-Meg's hardworking import Denzel Bowles was the runaway winner of the Best Import of the Conference Award.
Bowles finished with a total of 1,364 votes, while Talk 'N Text's Donnell Harvey finished with 886 to finish in second place.
Alaska's Cyrus Baguio finished third in the BPC race with 556 points, followed by Powerade's Marcio Lassiter (470 points), and Alaska's LA Tenorio (434 points).
Caguioa is now an official contender for the league's Most Valuable Player award, joining David who was the Best Player in the previous conference.
But the Kings guard might end up missing the rest of the season because of a fractured orbital socket.
"If my condition doesn't improve, the doctors say I may undergo a surgical procedure," he said. "Pero 'di ko iniisip 'yun. Ang nasa isip ko, lalaro ako."
