Praise for Extra Rice Inc: They don't play dirty, they just play (well) together, says Ginebra's Mamaril
“Game One, we were definitely outplayed. I was personally outplayed also. I
tried to redeem myself in Games Two and Three. But we weren’t able to do
what we want to do,” rues Ginebra starting center Billy Mamaril. Jerome Ascano
BILLY Mamaril has spent three fiercely fought games banging bodies with Rain or Shine’s bruising big men led by Beau Belga, JR Quinahan, and Jervy Cruz.
Yet in the hand, he didn't have anything bad to say about the Painters' 'Extra Rice Inc.'
After Ginebra’s PBA Philippine Cup campaign ended with 102-89 Game Three beating on Sunday night, Mamaril insisted the Elasto Painters' notorious frontline didn’t really play “dirty” but they simply “played (well) together,” which was why they emerged triumphant in the best-of-three series.
“It’s not like what people might think that they (Elasto Painters) are dirty, but they played (well) together. They had a system and they followed it. They just played solid defense individually and they played everyone tough,” the 6-6 Mamaril told Spin.ph after emerging from the team’s dugout.
"You can’t say anything bad against them."
Mamaril, son of former Ginebra big man Romulo, came through with 20 points - his best scoring output in four years - togo along with 10 rebounds and a career-best six shot blocks in 31 minutes of play as he tried to carry the load for the Kings in the series decider.
But he said the Painters' defense simply denied them good looks at the basket.
“Game One, we were definitely outplayed. I was personally outplayed also. I tried to redeem myself in Games Two and Three. But we weren’t able to do what we want to do,” said the Barangay Ginebra veteran slotman.
"We didn’t have good looks for Mark (Caguioa) and LA (Tenorio), they were forcing them and trapping them. The way I saw it, we weren’t getting enough shots between the goal and three-point line," he added.
Tenorio finished with 20 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three turnovers while playing 40 minutes for the Kings. He later praised Rain or Shine's depth, especially in the backcourt.
“Di ko alam ano nangyari eh. Kami yung naubusan eh kahit na three guards kami sa loob. Siguro mas marami silang players na naro-rotate. Naghahabol na kami eh … tapos ako 40 minutes nilaro ko, so siguro napagod na rin,” said Tenorio.
Caguioa, who had to played 39 minutes, scored 14 points but was a horrendous 5-of-18 shooting from the field. He was so frustrated after the loss he declined to talk to reporters.
