Games Wednesday (Smart-Araneta Coliseum)

5:15 p.m. — Talk ’N Text vs Barako Bull

7:30 p.m. — B-Meg vs Powerade

MANILA, Philippines — Rain or Shine arranged a quarterfinal showdown against crowd-favorite Barangay Ginebra after scoring a 91-85 win over also-ran Alaska in the PBA Philippine Cup Sunday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Despite the absence of their coach Yeng Guiao as well as top rookie Paul Lee, the Elasto Painters were able to survive the Aces, who were hoping to end the eliminations with a win after missing the playoffs for only the third time in the last 32 conferences.

Beau Belga scored 14 points with eight rebounds while Ronjay Buenafe also collected 14 points highlighted by three three-pointers as Rain or Shine ended its elimination campaign on a high note.

They finished with a 9-5 record, to end up at No. 5.

In the second game, Mark Caguioa had 18 points while Mike Cortez added 17 markers as Ginebra defeated defending champion Talk ’N Text, 96-82, to finish with a 9-5 card and took the No. 4 spot in the best-of-three quarters series that starts Wednesday.

No. 3 Petron will play No. 6 Meralco in the other three-game showdown.

Because of the defeat, TNT finished with a 10-4 card, the same record of B-Meg. However, due to a superior quotient the Llamados will take the No. 1 seed in the quarters and will face No. 8 Powerade Tigers, while No. 2 Tropang Texters will play No. 7 Barako Bull Energy.

Ahead by just four points (70-66) entering the final quarter, Rain or Shine outscored Alaska, 15-9, to grab an 85-75 advantage with 4:56 left to play.

First Game

Rain or Shine 91 — Belga 14, Buenafe 14, Rodriguez 12, Cruz 10, Matias 10, Chan 8, Uyloan 6, Arana 6, Norwood 4, Quianahan 4, Tang 3, Jaime 0.

Alaska 85 — Baguio 21, Tenorio 12, Thoss 12, Reyes 11, Eman 9, Custodio 8, Sotto 8, Salamat 2, Baracael 2, Pasculado 0.

Quarters: 19-20; 42-42; 70-66; 91-85.

“I think with Ginebra we can match up better,” said assistant coach Caloy Garcia, who called the shots for the Painters since head coach
Yeng Guiao had more important matters to attend to in Pampanga.
“They’re (Kings) strong in the wings, we’re strong in the wings. They
have big men who are not really dominant except if Erik Menk plays.

Rain or Shine has never defeated Ginebra in any series since it entered the league in 2006. The Painters
lost to the Kings in the semi-finals of the 2009 Fiesta Conference in
six games, and then were eliminated by Ginebra in the 2011 Fiesta
Conference quarter-finals, 2-1.
