Ginebra, Rain or Shine clash in big Sunday duel
RAIN or Shine is looking to sweep its last three remaining games in the PBA Philippine Cup as it eyes one of the top two slots in the standings that guarantees a twice-to-beat playoff incentive.
But coach Yeng Guiao believes thing is easier said than done – especially with the Elasto Painters up against the streaking Barangay Ginebra Kings Sunday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
“Wala naman kaming pine-prepare na special. We just need to come out with a lot of energy and be consistent. We know Ginebra is on a streak, but Alaska was also on a winning streak when we beat them. Ganun din halos ang Meralco,” said Guiao.
The Elasto Painters and the Gin Kings square off in the main game at 6:30 p.m..
Rain or Shine won its last five outings, including a confidence-boosting 102-98 come-from-behind win over Meralco in overtime last Wednesday.
The Elasto Painters clawed their way back from a 26-point hole against the Bolts, forced overtime through their defense and timely sniping from Jeff Chan and Gabe Norwood to pull off the improbable win.
“Looking at the standings, we have a big game ahead of us against San Mig Coffee. But in order for us to prep up ourselves well against San Mig, we need to play well and win against Ginebra,” said Guiao.
“Of course, if we’re coming off a loss to Ginebra, medyo mahihirapan kami mentally.”
The Kings have won their last three games, beating newcomer Globalport for a second straight time (81-79) to snap their five-game losing streak.
Then they scored a king-size 104-101 upset of defending champion Talk ‘N Text, before turning back Alaska, 96-93.
“Sa amin, we just go at it (win), cliché as it might seem. But we dug a big hole for ourselves (during the five straight losses), so now we just have to keep playing and improving,” said Barangay Ginebra coach Siot Tanquingcen.
The Gin Kings are at solo fifth in the standings with an even 5-5 (win-loss) card.
Mark Caguioa, the league’s reigning MVP, said the key to continue the team’s winning ways is to keep playing unselfish basketball.
“Siyempre, it’s a big boost, three in a row… Everybody is getting involved, ngayon tumututok na ang defense sa kanila kaya nakaka score mga guards,” he said.
