Tenorio turns from Lieutenant to "Gin-eral" in new team
MANILA, Philippines -- LA Tenorio is still in the process of fully adjusting to a new system in Barangay Ginebra. His indomitable will to win is tiding him and his team in the meantime.
The heady playmaker proved this by twice coming up big in the crunch for the Gin Kings, helping them open up the PBA Philippine Cup with back-to-back wins and earning for himself the Accel-PBA Press Corps Player of the Week for the extended period Sept. 30 to Oct. 7.
Tenorio did whatever was needed of him against GlobalPort and Rain or Shine, whether it be passing, rebounding or scoring, enabling Ginebra to take the early lead in the season-opening tournament.
None is happier than Kings coach Siot Tanquingcen. "He showed why he is considered one of the top, if not the top, point guards of the league. He does so many things," he said of the 28-year-old acquired in a pre-season trade from Alaska.
Tenorio said he was merely repaying his new team's trust in him.
"First of all, gusto kong magpasalamat sa mga teammates ko for the patience, kasi they really helped me to adjust right away sa system ng Ginebra," he stated.
"Basta ako every game I will play my best to help the team win," he added.
Tenorio showed that first in the tourney's kickoff game against GlobalPort, scoring only two points but dishing off 10 assists and hauling down nine rebounds. Four of his feeds and one of his two steals came in the last five minutes, helping dispel the Batang Pier's last-ditch uprising and enabling Ginebra to notch a runaway 110-90 victory.
Against Rain or Shine last Sunday, Tenorio exploded for five of his 20 points inside the last two minutes that pulled the Kings out of a tight game and into a 98-94 victory.
"Grabe, ang dami talagang nagagawa, nakakatulong sa team," enthused Tanquingcen.
It marked the first time since the 2009-10 edition of the same tournament that Ginebra had such a start and Tenorio aims to do all he can to further stretch the run.
"I'll continue to play hard and help Ginebra win every game," he vowed.
