2012-13 PBA Rookie Debuts: Ginebra's rookie duo shines
While I was happy that Rico Maierhofer got super extended
minutes and got pissed that Gary David’s
season-long double digit streak came to a screeching halt, there were six
rookies that saw action in the first game of the PBA’s 2012-13 Philippine Cup. Some of the rookies stole the show while
the others groped to form.
I’ll just quick hit the rookies
and separate the best from the so-so.
THE BEST:
CHRIS ELLIS /GINEBRA
In some ways he was restrained
in NLEX because undoubtedly, the team
has so much starpower and their firepower resulted to back-to-back-to-back
championships. With that said, this guy impressed in his first stint as a pro. Chris Ellis never dunked but we saw him
soar as it resulted to three emphatic blocks to go with his 12 points, 1
rebound, and 2 assists. I think his minutes will get slashed when Dylan Ababou returns but for Ababou’s
case he needs to return soon if he wants to keep the starting gig away from
this helluva rookie. With that said though, Ellis needs to keep his intensity
at bay because the guard was overly excited in his first bout that he fouled
out early in the fourth quarter. He was gracious with the call though as he
went to the GlobalPort officials to
shake their hands.
KEITH JENSEN /GINEBRA
It felt like Keith Jensen is the mirror image of
Ellis but in the game, Jensen made his presence felt. For those who thought
Jensen is a so-so find, well take a look at what he accomplished – 13 points, 3
rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 block. I know he is not a big guy (Ellis is bigger
than him) but for a power forward, he can be a pretty swell passer as seen in
their first game. He can also defend on the inside and I’m torn if he’s the
rookie year version of Rudy Hatfield
or the “newly-transferred to Purefoods”version of Marc Pingris.
AJ MANDANI /GLOBALPORT
Talk. About. Steals. For the nine
teams that snubbed AJ Mandani (Talk N Text’s first pick was at number
20), now you know what you’ve lost. This former Blackwater guard played as if
he’s the Talk N Text version of Kenny
Evans (don’t get mad at this statement because when Evans played for TNT he
was insanely awesome… but then he thought he deserves the maximum salary
contract… and admittedly that was a bad idea). During the run that trimmed
Ginebra’s lead to eight points, Mandani flew from offense to defense as if he’s
a F’N bullet! He orchestrated like a vet, dived the loose balls oozing with
energy, and nailed the tough shots. Despite GlobalPort’s loss, Mandani deserves
a lot of props with his 13 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals.
THE SO-SO:
JASON DEUTCHMAN/ GLOBALPORT
In defense to Deutchman, I
thought he did a fairly good job in his first stint in the PBA. People doubted
GlobalPort for picking him this high because he had ACL on both of his knees and his offense is questionable. He scored
2 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, and had a steal and a block. I’m not going to say
Quinito Henson’s newest grading term
but he did messed up a gimme layup that could have diminished the lead down to
six. I think he needs to calm his nerves because the game showed his
inexperience.
BOGART RAYMUNDO/ GLOBALPORT
The former Philippine Patriot (so technically he is Mikee Romero’s holdover from his former ABL team) scored 2 points,
had 2 rebounds, and had an assist and steal in 13 minutes of action. These are
good stats considering that people never really saw Angelus Bogart wowing the
crowd. His minutes kind of pissed off Romel
Adducul though because The General
was limited to two minutes and has only a foul to show. And when Adducul came
out… the cameras saw him snarling at the bench.
VIC MANUEL / GLOBALPORT
His number. His looks. If you
thought Vic Manuel is just a
youthful version of Ricky Calimag,
then you are correct. Fact is if there is one rookie that needs to get his
groove to the game, it is this guy. The former
PBL and PBA D-League MVP had only 2 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal,
and 2 turnovers in 18 minutes and these numbers aren’t that impressive. If
there’s any consolation, he could eclipse what Rabeh Al-Hussaini did if he played ten minutes more.
So here are my recollections on
how some of the 2012 rookie batch fared in their debut. I’ll promise to tackle
all the rookie outputs… except if the wait for their debut is like the first
game of Julius Pasculado.
Oh. This reminds me…
Where the hell is Julius
Pasculado?Game over.
