Barangay Ginebra’s Mark Caguioa bagged his second straight Best Player of the Conference (BPC), raising the trophy in the season-ending Governors’ Cup, bolstering his chances of winning his first-ever Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.
The 6-foot-1 Caguioa, the 2001 Rookie of the Year, garnered a total score of 1,121 points from the combined Statistical Points and votes from the media, players and the PBA Commissioner’s Office to beat out Rain or Shine’s Paul Lee. It was the third BPC trophy for Ginebra star.
Lee was a surprise second in the race, tallying 694 points, followed by B-Meg’s Marc Pingris (586) and James Yap (537), and Powerade‘s Gary David (528), the Philippine Cup BPC.
Even with a second BPC, and a strong chance of winning the MVP, Caguioa has mixed feelings after Ginebra failed to advance to the finals this conference when the Kings were knocked out in their do-or-die game by the Llamados last Friday.
“I’m happy I won, but I’m not satisfied. We didn’t go to the finals. The goal is get to the finals for my team. I’ll definitely trade it (BPC award), even last conference. When you get to the finals, it’s a different feeling,” said Caguioa.
“I still have that feeling, it’s like half empty. Until now, I still can’t sleep after the last game,” added Caguioa, who won the BPC in the Commissioner’s Cup despite missing the semifinals with a broken right orbital socket.
Caguioa, who a few days ago said that he thinks “David deserves to win the MVP award” after leading the Tigers to a finals stint in the all-Filipino conference, now has a solid chance to win the award because of the two BPCs.
