Mark Caguioa named Governors’ Cup Best Player; Jamelle Cornley is Best Import
Mark Caguioa annexed his second straight Best Player of the Conference award on Wednesday, winning the top individual plum for the season-ending Governors’ Cup award.
The Barangay Ginebra superstar averaged 17.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists over the tournament, leading the Gin Kings to the semifinals. Caguioa also won the Commissioner’s Cup award, but failed to play in the semis of that conference because of an eye injury.
Jamelle Cornley, who led the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters to their first finals appearance in finals history, was named Best Import. The hulking former Penn State forward beat out B-MEG’s Marqus Blakely for the award.
Coming into Game Two of the finals, Cornley was averaging 23.3 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 2.9 assists for Rain or Shine. He led the Elasto Painters to an 8-1 record in the eliminations, before wrapping up their campaign at 10-4 to finish on top of the heap after the semis.
With his Best Player win, Caguioa fortifies his chances for winning the season’s Most Valuable Player award. He is expected to be challenged by Powerade scoring machine Gary David, who leads in the statistical points race apart from winning the Best Player award in the Philippine Cup.
Caguioa became the first back-to-back winner of the BPC award after Jay Washington accomplished the feat in the 2010 PBA Fiesta Conference and the 2010-11 Philippine Cup.
