Mark Caguioa relishes ‘breakthrough game’ against tough rival San Mig Coffee

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel superstar Mark Caguioa admits San Mig Coffee has always been a tough matchup for him.

But with his team’s back against the wall, the PBA’s reigning Most Valuable Player unloaded 25 points on prolific 5-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc to lead Ginebra to a 96-88 triumph over the Mixers.

“It was my breakthrough game against San Mig Coffee,” Caguioa told InterAKTV.

“I always had a hard time playing against this team mainly because their defense was focused on me.”

Mark the Spark came through at the right moment, hitting back-to-back three-pointers late in the game to douse San Mig Coffee’s rally.

“They were pressuring us, so I need to take over. They were trying to trap us, that’s why I was left open several times,” said Caguioa.

But Caguioa said the win — only Ginebra’s second in seven games — was a result of team play.

“It’s not only me who played a good game tonight. LA (Tenorio), Billy (Mamaril) and even Chris (Ellis) on the defensive end, played well,” said Caguioa.
