GINEBRA GIN KINGS : A CULTURE OF MEDIOCRITY ?
Ginebra lost to Bmeg, 74-72, last Friday to lose its spot in the championship series of the current PBA Governors’ Cup.
While I commend the Gin Kings for putting up a good fight, I can’t help but blame their coach for the heartbreaking loss. Coach Siot Tanquincen made a serious mistake when he opted to use the clock in a play he designed for Cedric Bozeman. As a result of the time consuming play, Ginebra was left with not enough time for a decent play for its last possession of the game. The play of Coach Siot during the last 2.5 seconds of the game was so poorly designed that it left Raymundo with no other choice but to throw up a desperate three pointer. The shot did not have a ghost of a chance of going in.
I am beginning to think that Ginebra management takes the team for granted with regards to having a highly-capable coaching staff and complete line-up because it knows too well that the Ginebra team remains highly popular. Whether the team wins or loses, management knows too well that fans will continue to support the team. Fans have become numb to the numerous times that the team has failed to advance to the finals. Fans have learned to handle the many disappointments that Ginebra gives them. And here lies the danger. Fans are reduced to mere fanatics and made to accept defeat as a way of life.
Ginebra officials will do well to take drastic steps to improve their team before it’s too late. Fans of Ginebra can only take so much heartaches and pain. It is high time that Ginebra establishes a culture of excellence to back up its tremendous popularity. Popularity based on emotional attachment and not merit should never be tolerated. It only cultivates a culture of mediocrity and mindlessness.
