‘H-Bomb’ Hatfield detonates to carry Ginebra past Talk ‘N Text in OT

Barangay Ginebra was looking for energy, which it lacked in its past two losses. Rudy Hatfield, the team’s ultimate energy guy, was more than willing to provide it.
Hatfield led the league’s crowd favorite to a 94-91 upset victory over erstwhile solo leader Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters, 94-91, in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Sunday night at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
He finished with a career-high 30 points as the Gin Kings snapped a two-game slide and improved its win-loss record to 4-3, good for a tie for third to fourth places with the Powerade Tigers.
“It’s good that we won. Anybody could beat anybody in this league,” said Barangay Ginebra coach Siot Tanquingcen, his right hand heavily bandaged after injuring out of frustration in his team’s last game.
“That’s what we’re looking for, energy, not only from Rudy, but the entire team. We were able to get that energy from the entire team.”
Hatfield was more than just a scoring machine for the Gin Kings. His energy was infectious as the rest of his team outhustled the Tropang Texters, finishing with a 61-49 rebounding edge.
Hatfield, who rejoined Barangay Ginebra this conference after leaving the team midway through lst season, added 14 rebounds, including two offensive boards in the closing seconds of the ballgame that virtually sealed the game for Barangay Ginebra, to the delight of the 13,515 fans that packed the arena.
The Gin Kings survived the game despite having an atrocious shooting from the foul line. They shot 13-of-29 from the free throw area (44.8%), with import Jackson Vroman shooting 1-of-12 from the line.
