Josh Powell plays down struggles of LA Lakers, Ginebra: 'Everybody goes through tough times'

“It’s not always (gonna) be great. I don’t think there’s ever been a team that goes great all the time and just plays great and dominate every year,” says new Ginebra import Josh Powell.

NEW Ginebra import Josh Powell played down the tough times being experienced by the Gin Kings and his former team Los Angeles Lakers, saying every team goes through the highs as well as the lows.

“Everybody goes through spurts. The Lakers go through spurts, the (Chicago) Bulls went through their spurts," Powell said ahead of his debut with Ginebra. "And the other thing, too, when you break up a team, there’s different guys and different chemistry, a lot is different.”

Powell, who won two NBA championships with the Lakers in the 2009 and 2010 seasons, said LA fans constantly ask him through his Twitter account @JP21Reasons about his thoughts on the team which is currently second to last in the Western Conference with a 25-49 record.

Now he is deluged with similar questions about Ginebra, which, after an impressive run in the Philippine Cup playoffs, has gone 2-4 with former import Leon Rodgers in the import-spiced Commissioner's Cup ahead of Powell's debut in a game against Meralco on Wednesday night.

“The fans talk to me all the time about it (the Lakers’ struggles) on Twitter. It’s kinda like the same thing I just said about here (Ginebra), that’s your team, you go through the disappointments with them and you go through the great times with them,” Powell shared to Spin.ph.

Powell said even the great teams of the Lakers and the Chicago Bulls have gone through difficult times. He added that breaking up a team’s core and bringing in new players affect the chemistry of the team, which is why fans need to be patient and stay positive as they support their ballclub.

“It’s not always (gonna) be great. I don’t think there’s ever been a team that goes great all the time and just plays great and dominate every year,” said the 31-year-old six-year NBA veteran.

The former North Carolina State standout is hopeful Ginebra fans will come out and support the Gin Kings as they try to sweep their last three elimination round assignments and revive their playoff hopes.

“The only thing is, that’s your team so as a fan, just stay positive. I’m not saying you can’t be mad and frustrated. But at the end of the day, if you love your team, the best you can do is support them,” Powell said.
