Ginebra’s Rodgers tips hat off for ‘Never Say Die’ second unit

MANILA – Facing the dreadful possibility of not making the next stage of the 2014 PBA Commissioner’s Cup, Leon Rodgers pondered why Barangay Ginebra San Miguel lost a winnable game against Air 21.

"We made a lot of mental mistakes to be such a veteran team. I thought we started the second half pretty good, getting scores and getting stops."

"I know I'm the import and typically I'm supposed to be in there but I was involved in the first group," said Rodgers.

After suffering a 97-95 setback against the Express, Ginebra (2-4) fell further in the standings as they are now tied with Barako Bull in the eighth spot. They must now win their remaining games against Alaska, Meralco and Rain or Shine in order to keep their flickering playoff hopes alive.

Rodgers took his hat off to the second unit for bringing energy and life to the team in the fourth quarter.

"The second team came with effort, they played with heart, something that the first group did not play with. Coach, to his credit, he stuck with them because they deserve to have the chance to win the game," he said.

"The second group carried us, the second group showed fight, the second group showed 'Never Say Die' but it was too late."

Asked if he was surprised that coach Ato Agustin called on him in the dying seconds where the game was still up for grabs, Rodgers said that he wanted the ball in his hands even if he's gone cold in the fourth quarter.

Rodgers, a three-time Dutch League MVP, is appreciative of the confidence given by the Ginebra coaching staff on him.

"I know coach believes in me. I know he believes in my scoring ability up into this game. We needed a basket. He called on me and I accepted the call because I wanted the ball," bared Rodgers who had 18 points, four rebounds and two assists in 28 minutes.

"It's just tough to miss the shot and it's one of those things where I could have just gone to a jump shot. I wasn't surprised that he called on me."

Barangay Ginebra outscored Air 21 in the last quarter by 8 but it wasn't enough to steal the victory.

The reinforcement is well-aware that their situation is not favourable for them now.

"We now have on our back that we have win the next three games to get into a decent position in the playoffs and or if you make the playoffs."

"We had this on our calendars, we wanted to win this game. We don't take anybody lightly. It's showing that our chemistry is not there yet."

The Gin Kings' next game is on Wednesday, April 2, versus the Meralco Bolts at the Big Dome.

yan naman ang nagustuhan ko sa mangilan ngilan na nagawang tama ng coaching staff.. maganda pinakita nung 2nd unit kaya hindi na nakabalik sila LA, Greg at yung import. mas nakitaan silang eagerness na manalo yun nga lang talagang may halong kamalasan din..

maganda talaga pinakita ng second unit, sana lahat ng players ganun ang attitude, never say die talaga.....palitan na talaga si rodgers, wala na eh...

imo, it's time to replace rodgers, we need an energetic import yung nakikipagpatayan sa bola, yung tipong handang makipagpalitan ng mukha sa kalaban makuha lang yung rebound

may post si Ms. Sheryl Reyes, may darating atang kapalit, if he arrives on Wednesday, April 2, last game na ni rodgers un pero kung mas maaga darating, ang bago ang maglalaro against meralco...hindi lang sinabi kung sino

Makakarating ng maaga yung kapalit ni Rogers kasi Sunday pa lang naman ngayon eh.Tingin ko by Tuesday morning andyan na yung kapalit at diretso na sa praktis in time for Wednesday game.I am sure negotiations are finalizing and sealing the deal.Bilis bilisan nyo na medyo masakit na sa mata itong si Kenny Rogers Roasters,he he.
