Guiao prefers to face Ginebra
For Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao, claiming the first finals berth in the 2014 PLDT myDSL PBA Philippine Cup is not a guarantee of winning the championship.
For one, the two teams – San Mig Coffee and Ginebra San Miguel – fighting for the other finals berth are both formidable and have winning traditions to protect.

“Sa totoo lang wala naman talaga kaming option kung sino ang gusto namin makaharap sa Finals eh, parehas na malakas ‘yung teams ng Ginebra and San Mig,” said Guiao.
While Guiao acknowledges that it takes a lot of extraordinary effort before one can beat Ginebra, he still prefers to meet the Gin Kings in the finals for the thrill of it.
“Parang mas masaya na kalaban ang Ginebra,” said Guiao.
Since Ginebra is widely considered as the league’s crowd favorite, Guiao believes it will be a blockbuster series if they will meet Ginebra in a best-of-seven title series.
But to make Guiao’s wish a reality, the Kings have to beat the Mixers two in a row to advance to the finals.
Ginebra trails San Mig, 2-3, in their own semis series.
Rain or Shine actually lost to Ginebra in their lone meeting during the elimination stage of the conference, 97-84, last Nov. 24.
But they atoned themselves by beating Petron 4-1 in their semis series.
That was big since it gave them a different “high” going into finals.
For emerging victorious in a series where Petron is heavily favored, Guiao gave his boys two days of rest. They capped their scintillating victory with a 97-88 decision last Friday.
“We’ll start preparing for the Finals,” said Guiao as he traveled back to Manila yesterday from his hometown Pampanga where he watched Game 5 on TV after serving out his one-game suspension.
Rain or Shine won the Governors’ Cup title during the 2011-12 PBA Season, then made the Philippine Cup finals the following season only to the swept in the seven-game series by Talk ’N Text.
Guiao, on the other hand, is in his 12th Finals stint as a coach and he is aiming for a seventh title, but first in an all-Filipino tournament.
