Loss against small-ball Meralco exposes Ginebra twin towers, says LA Tenorio

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel’s first loss in the PLDT MyDSL Philippine Cup against Meralco on Tuesday night may give future opponents a blueprint on how to stop the Gin Kings’ twin towers, according to star guard LA Tenorio.

Power forward Japeth Aguilar led Ginebra with 23 points and 13 rebounds, but had a tough time with his matchup with the smaller Jared Dillinger on the defensive end. With Meralco playing small-ball, Dillinger took advantage of his quickness against the high-flying Ginebra forward.

Aguilar’s frontcourt partner Greg Slaughter, meanwhile, struggled with the worst game of his young PBA career. Ginebra’s top overall pick finished with modest numbers of seven points and six rebounds, getting dominated by Rabeh Al-Hussaini, who had 14 and 16.

“I have to give credit to Meralco,” Tenorio told InterAksyon.com. “They played good defense, especially against our big guys.”

The Bolts’ tactics put a lot of pressure on Ginebra, according to Tenorio.

“Meralco played four guards. Medyo nahirapan kami i-match up. Kontra sa amin eh.

Nawala si (Reynel) Hugnatan so naging isang big na lang sila. Give credit to them kasi nakapag-adjust sila sa game.”

Al-Hussaini said Meralco really went all out against Ginebra, which was coming off three straight wins before the match.

“We came prepared for this game. They’ve got the biggest frontcourt. Coach Ryan (Gregorio) told us that no matter how big your opponents, whoever they are, just play 100 percent,” said Al-Hussaini, who downplayed his numbers against Slaughter.

“It is what it is, bilog ang bola. During practice, our game plan is to prevent Japeth Aguilar and Greg Slaughter to produce much points. We know we’re a small team so if we get pounded inside, we’re in deep trouble.”

According to Tenorio, they were caught flatfooted by Meralco’s gameplan.

“Nagulat kami. First time after three games we didn’t start well,” said Tenorio, who noted that Ginebra’s next opponent Talk ‘N Text could try the same tactic.

“After seeing this game, I think they will do the same thing dahil wala rin silang legitimate center. We have to be ready and do something about it.”

okay lang matalo sa meralco, wag lang sa Alaska, RoS, TnT, pero tama, na-exposed ang weakness natin, it is up to the coaching staff now to make adjustments....

swerte lng tlga meralco dt game,nd sobrang malas nmn tau..k lng un,at least tanggal na pressure satin.. prang evry game kc mapressure pg wla ka pang talo..sana lng my necessary adjustments na c coach ato for nxt game..

Ang mali ni Ato tayo nag adjust sa kanila ,dyan mahina si Ato sa mga match up.Bakit tayo magaadjust sa kanila eh lamang na lamang tayo sa malalaki.Kung mag small ball sila wala ako pakiaalam.
Mas maganda kung nag stick sila sa original line up natin na Slaughter,Aguilar,Ellis ,Caguioa at Tenorio against Al Hussaini,Dilinger,Salvacion,Wilson at Cortez.

HIndi naging pasensyoso ang Ginebra.Dapat talaga simula pa lang dinikdik na nila sa ilalim ang Meralco para maubos yung bigmen nila tapos kung mag double sila sa poste rotate sa open man sa mga shooters natin.

Ewan ko ba sa coaching staff natin parang hindi marunong mag adjust.Noong nakitang nag small ball ang Meralco nagkawindang windang na pati opensa.Better stick to the game plan which is to pound in the inside.
