With statement game, 34-year-old Caguioa douses 'passing of the torch' pleas
MANILA -- Mark Caguioa saw Ginebra’s lead dwindle little by little.
The 19-point bubble they put up early in the game was pricked by rookies Terrence Romeo, RR Garcia and Justin Chua.
Caguioa, a 12-year PBA veteran, was challenged with what he saw. Especially when Romeo, the fourth overall pick in this year's draft, took over late in the game.
"In the fourth quarter, when I saw him… he kept scoring," recalled Caguioa in a televised postgame interview. "I was thinking, I got to do something dahil I wasn't taking any shots."

"So when I started making the shots, LA gave me a pass and then I hit a three that went on, kaya I wanted to keep on scoring."
His counterpart Romeo, finished with a team-high 27 points on an impressive 11-of-16 shooting. GlobalPort was able to tie the game at 91 with still 5:05 left on the clock on a Sol Mercado layup off a Romeo feed.
Then Romeo scored against Caguioa that gave GlobalPort the lead. That was when the 2001 Rookie of the Year decided to take charge.
"Gusto kong i-match yung intensity niya na nilalagay ko sa offense," revealed Caguioa.
The former league MVP scored 13 of his 29 points in crunchtime, leading Ginebra to victory and keeping their immaculate record clean with a 109-104 victory over GlobalPort.
"I wanted to match his scoring. I'm looking at the scoreboard, I had 15 points and he was already up at the twenties. Siyempre dun lumalabas yung pagka-competitor ko. Hindi mawawala yun."
Romeo was coming off a career game, scoring 34 points in their 114-100 demolition of Air 21 last Saturday.

Caguioa, who turned 34 last November 19, wanted to prove to everyone that he still has it. He practically doused all the passing of the torch statements coming from naysayers.
"For all the thirty-plus years old na sinasabing matatanda na, ipakita natin sa mga rookies na mas kaya pa natin sumabay sa kanila," said Caguioa, encouraging all the PBA veterans to prove that they can still compete with the young guns.
