Ginebra lets Uichico go ‘with heavy heart’

No less than Ginebra San Miguel Inc. president Bernie Marquez wished Jong Uichico well on the coach’s departure from the San Miguel Corporation to join the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national program.
“With a heavy heart, we are sending coach Jong Uichico to the Philippine men’s basketball team because we feel that the national team is need of someone like him to improve its performance in international tournaments,” said Marquez.
“It is the national interest at stake here and we believe that the Philippines will be very fortunate to get the services of a coach with the intelligence and experience of Jong.”
Uichico is leaving SMC after almost two decades with the conglomerate. He also won eight titles for the corporation, six with San Miguel and two with Ginebra.
“We thank him for providing so many championships, the last two with the Ginebra franchise,” Marquez added.
Prior to his departure, Uichico served as co-coach of Ginebra alongside Siot Tanquingcen. He will reportedly serve as an assistant coach for SMART-Gilas.
