FIL-Canadian rookie James Forrester isn’t about to wilt under the glare of the spotlight after fan expectations heightened on Barangay Ginebra at No. 4 overall in Sunday’s PBA draft.
The 6-foot-1 guard out of Arellano University is now under the microscope after being drafted ahead of high-caliber college stars such as Terrence Romeo and RR Garcia, Jeric Teng, and Alex Nuyles, among others.
But the bold move by the Kings only spurred Forrester to work harder with less than two weeks left before the start of the league’s 39th season.
“I have my utmost respect for these players,” said Forrester, referring to Romeo and Co. in an interview with Spin.ph on Tuesday. “But I also know what I am capable of. I know I won’t disappoint the fans. I’m aware of that (expectations).”
Forrester, who averaged 7.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in 15 games for the Chiefs in the ongoing NCAA season, spent his second day of practice with the Kings working with resident stars Mark Caguioa, LA Tenorio, and Jayjay Helterbrand.
The soft-spoken rookie said he’s still in shock over the way Ginebra traded veterans Willy Wilson and Rico Maierhofer to Barako Bull in order to obtain his draft rights.
“I’m still in shock on Sunday, but so far, everything is great. The chemistry here, I mean, everybody is one big family here (Ginebra practice),” he added.
With the reloaded Kings strengthened further by the acquisition of top rookie big man Greg Slaughter, Forrester is focused more on playing defense owing to the presence of numerous offensive options within the team.
“All I have to do is play my role, which is to play defense because we have a lot of scorers. We just need to get some stops because our goal is to win the championship this conference,” he said.
