Ginebra star Caguioa fined P20,000 for rant against 'sloppy' officiating

MARK Caguioa has been hit with a P20,000 fine by the PBA Commissioner's Office on Wednesday for criticizing the officiating in Barangay Ginebra's loss to Alaska on Sunday night.

The reigning MVP took to Twitter to air his disgust at the sloppy officiating in the 99-102 loss to Alaska, tweeting on his account @officialMC47, "So pwede pala sa PBA yung traveling noh? Ksi d naman nila tinatawag on both teams eh."


He later voiced out the same sentiment in post-game interviews with the media.


However, Commissioner Rudy Salud said such statements were "inimical to the interest" of the league, saying the Ginebra star should have taken up the issue directly with league officials.


"As the leader of his ballclub and a stalwart of the league, Mr. Caguioa realized he should have ventilated his issues to the league office directly for proper remedial action which by rule and long-standing policy is the procedure that players, coaches, and team officials must observe," said Salud.


The game, however, had been marked by protests from both sides over glaring non-calls, none more obvious than a travelling violation by Jayjay Helterbrand which escaped the refereees' sight.


Caguioa himself drew contact in a desperate three-point shot that could have tied the game in the final seconds but failed to get a foul called.
