Ababou comeback with Ginebra derailed after suffering shoulder tear in tune-up

 

After sitting out close to nine months due to an ACL injury, Dylan Ababou faces another three weeks on the sidelines after suffering a torn rotator cuff during a tune-up match against Globalport. Snow Badua

JUST when he is about to stage a comeback, Barangay Ginebra sophomore guard Dylan Ababou has once again been sidelined by another injury.

The former Gilas Pilipinas mainstay told Spin.ph he has suffered a torn left rotator cuff after being hit hard by Globalport guard Mark Yee during their tune-up match on Friday.

“Wala. Three weeks akong mawawala. Napunit yung external rotator cuff ko. Nakabenda ako ngayon. Hindi pwedeng galawin,” said Ababou, shaking his head.

The former University of Santo Tomas star has just recovered from an ACL injury that has kept him from seeing action for the Gin Kings since November.

But Ababou finds solace in the fact that he won't have to go under the knife this time.

“Ang maganda lang rito, wala akong surgery or anything na bubuksan. Kasi mas worse yun,” he said.

With the three-week timeframe, the sweet-shooting wingman might miss Ginebra’s Governors Cup debut against Petron on August 18 and the game against the Meralco Bolts on August 24.

Ababou said he has no choice but to rest his shoulders.

“Kailangan lang talagang ipahinga ito. Kung babalik? Huwag naman sana. Kaya talagang dadaanin ko sa tamang pahinga,” he said, adding a check-up with famed orthopedic surgeon Dr. Raul Canlas on Saturday will determine how early he can come back.

“Nahihiya na rin ako sa mga Ginebra fans. Kasi eto injured na naman ako ngayon. Hindi ko alam bakit lagi akong injured ngayon. Pero alam ko naman lagi silang andyan sa amin,” he said.

Aside from Ababou, a number of Ginebra players are also nursing injuries.

Both Kerby Raymundo and Josh Urbiztondo are also not joining team practices. Raymundo sustained a minor knee injury after a collision with teammate Willy Wilson in practice while Urbiztondo was hit in the hamstring during the Globalport tune-up.

Chris Ellis is recovering from food poisoining while Jayjay Helterbrand just returned to practice on Monday after sitting out a week due to a bout with flu.
