After stopping Dunigan and Bowles, Vernon Macklin next target for Alaska’s tough defense

The Alaska defense has been the secret star of the Aces’ run to the Commissioner’s Cup finals, holding down top imports Michael Dunigan and Denzel Bowles in the playoffs.

“We did that to (Michael) Dunigan in our playoff battle against Air21 and we limited Denzel Bowles to his lowest output in our series against San Mig Coffee,” said Alaska coach Luigi Trillo.

Next up for Alaska is Ginebra’s energetic import Vernon Macklin.

“I will be foolish if I won’t put three or four guys on Macklin,” said Trillo, who noted that making stops has been the team’s calling card in the tournament.

“We take pride in our defense. In fact we’re the No. 1 team in terms of giving up field goal percentage,” he said.

Trillo knows all about Ginebra’s explosive backcourt even without superstar guard Mark Caguioa, and Alaska wants to slow the game down against the Gin Kings.

“We really want to turn the series into a defensive struggle,” he said.
