We just gave up, laments Caguioa
NJURED Barangay Ginebra star Mark Caguioa expressed his frustration after seeing the Gin Kings get blown out of the court, 98-80, by a running and gunning Talk ‘N Text squad in Game Three on Wednesday night before a record crowd of more than 23,000 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
“When we were down by only three points, I told them (teammates) it looks like they were up by 20 points," said Caguioa after emerging from a gloomy Ginebra dugout. "I said let’s pick it up and let’s attack the basket. That was it, but I don’t know what happened.
"We just fell apart. We just gave up,” he added.
The reigning league MVP, who has been out for almost two months now due to a knee injury, said it was hard to see Ginebra fans going home disappointed because of the way they played in the second half.
“That’s (losing without fighting) what I hate, seeing the fans, jampacked, it’s one way of showing they support us, but to give them a show like that, that’s uncalled for, we let them down,” he lamented.
Caguioa, however, remains convinced that after their long post-game talk at the dugout, the Gin Kings will come out with a greater resolve as they try to send the series to a deciding Game Five on Friday.
“That’s what I said. In games like this, we should live up to the never-say-die spirit," he said. "It’s not too late. Ano ba naman yung nag-start kami ng 0-4 tapos nanalo kami ng six straight.
“In Game Four, I’m pretty sure there’s no way we’re gonna go out there and play like this again,” he added.
Game 4 between the Gin Kings and the Tropang Texters is set on Friday at 6:45 p.m. at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
