Skywalker tribute highlights Air Force Ellis’ victory in PBA slam dunk contest

As expected, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel rookie Chris Ellis won the PBA slam dunk title, but not before a challenge from teammate Elmer Espiritu.

Apart from winning his first dunk crown, Ellis was able to pay tribute to PBA legend and Ginebra team manager Samboy Lim, who he considers his mentor.

“Samboy Lim is very influential to me. He keeps telling me that I need to get better every game, attack the rim more aggressively. I was able to watch some of the highlights of his game (from YouTube),” Ellis told InterAKTV in an exclusive interview.

Ellis named his first dunk the Skywalker, in honor of the high-flying San Miguel legend. That slam earned Ellis 50 points from the judges.

He continued his dominance in the second round, scoring another perfect 50.

But Ellis looked like his bid was in trouble in the finals, after scoring just 44 points on his first jam. That was one point below Espiritu’s first dunk in the final round.

But Espiritu couldn’t convert on his second dunk attempt, an ambitious alleyoop attempt from Mark Barroca in the stands, allowing Ellis to come away with the crown with an elbow-through-the-ring dunk.

Despite his win, Ellis promised to do better in future events.

“I was hoping I could get a jersey of (Samboy Lim) and wear it, but there will always be next time,” he added. “As for my performance, I knew I could have done better, but I promised to do better next time.”

congrats chris.... sa totoo lang hindi ako masyado na amaze sa pinakita mo kasi ineexpect ko na makikita ko yun mga dunk na nakikita ko sa nba... at ganun na nga nangyari but again congrats... kahit naka tshirt ka pa naging maganda pa rin ang performance mo...

yeah, right nothing spectacular sa slumdunks ni Chris, but I like how he idolizes Samboy. I was waiting for a dunk ala Michael Jordan and Julius Erving, yung naglalakad sa ere, galing midcourt, bitbit ang bola then, Bang!!!!Mas maganda pa yung ginawa ni Hodge eh, he was able to jump over Ellis for a magnificent dunk (ginawa na ni Canaleta un), but it was a good one.
