Ginebra coach Alfrancis Chua on beating Rain or Shine: ‘They underestimated us’

“They underestimated us.”

That was how Barangay Ginebra San Miguel coach Alfrancis Chua explained how his underdog team defeated Rain or Shine in the quarterfinals of the Commissioner’s Cup.

The seventh-seed Gin Kings booked their ticket to the semifinals with two straight victories over the second-ranked Elasto Painters, who were coming off back-to-back stints in the finals of the two previous tournaments. The Gin Kings did it despite missing superstar Mark Caguioa, while top point guard LA Tenorio struggled in Sunday’s second win scoring just two points.

Still, other players stepped up.

“They underestimated our players, pilay-pilay kami, hindi nila na-anticipate ang puso ng mga bata,” said Chua.

The quarterfinals victory continued Ginebra’s storybook conference that has seen the Gin Kings rebound from a 0-4 start to crash the final four.

Up next for Ginebra in the semifinals is Talk ‘N Text, another powerhouse team. But Chua believes that Ginebra can pull off yet another upset.

“Morale ng mga bata at yung puso, hindi maalis yun,” he said.
