Fans' support, never-say-die spirit make Ginebra hard to rule out in playoffs, says Hizon
BARANGAY Ginebra is facing a dire situation in the PBA Commissioner's Cup playoffs, needing to beat second seed Rain or Shine twice just to make it past the quarterfinal stage.
But never, ever count the Kings out, said Vince Hizon.
"Anything that Ginebra does, don't count them out," said the former PBA star, who spent the best years of his pro career with the last batch of Ginebra players that played under legendary player-coach Robert Jaworski.
“Just the will to win of Ginebra and never-say-die attitude that coach (Robert) Jaworski started many years ago still hasn’t died yet. That’s for sure,” he added.
Hizon, 42, said two factors make Ginebra dangerous in the playoffs - the vaunted never-say-die spirit of the Jaworski teams that he said has lived on in the current batch of Ginebra players, and the fiercely loyal support of fans which he fondly calls the team's "sixth man."
“Every team will tell you that when you play Ginebra, you have to take into consideration the crowd factor. That is enough to somehow intimidate the opposing team,” said the Fil-Am player.
"The sixth man which is the crowd acts like a moving force that will make the team reach greater heights.”
To prove his point, Hizon said fans need only to look back at the current Ginebra's resurgence in the mid-season tournament after a horrible 0-3 start.
“At the start of this conference, who would have thought that this team has the capability to win six games in a row?" the former Ateneo star said. "That’s their never-say-die spirit.”
He added: “I hope the best for my former team, it is like a family to me. That’s the way I’ve always looked at it. It’s like a family. Once you’re a Ginebra guy, you will always be a Ginebra guy.”
