Red-hot Ginebra keen to ride wave of good form
BARANGAY Ginebra have brought down two league giants in Talk 'N Text and San Mig Coffee over the past week.
But if the Gin Kings are to move up the standings and secure their playoff position in the PBA Commissioner's Cup, Mark Caguioa feels they have to take care of business against the teams in the middle of the pack.
“Ang maganda lang ngayon, natatalo namin yung malalaking teams," said the reigning league MVP after Ginebra's 107-100 win over defending Philippine Cup titlist Talk 'N Text on Sunday night.
"Ngayon, kailangan na naming talunin pati sa ilalim ng malalakas,” Caguioa added.
Ginebra, now 3-5 win-loss, gets the opportunity to do just that on Wednesday when it takes on Meralco, a team that is playing a lot better than its 4-4 record suggests.
Ginebra, however, is on a roll, winning three of four games since Herbert Hill was replaced by Vernon Macklin, who is averaging 21.6 points, 15 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.4 blocks in 42 minutes for the Kings.
More than that, Macklin's presence has lifted the spirits of the rest of the Kings most especially Caguioa, who currently leads the league in scoring with an average that is just a shade below 23 points a game.
“We have to keep winning," said Ginebra coach Alfrancis Chua ahead of the 7:30 p.m. match against the Bolts. "And at least, wala na kami sa cellar. Dalawang malaking isda iyun (na tinalo namin).”
Meralco is coming off a 71-76 loss to San Mig after failing to sustain a strong start and squandering a double-digit lead.
Nevertheless, Bolts coach Ryan Gregorio noted they are still in the middle of the standings and he believes they could find a way to win against the league's most popular ballclub.
“We’re 3-1 in our last four games. So it’s not like a lost cause. We’re still in the middle of the pack. We just need to settle down and find ways to win,” said Gregorio.
