Best Player of the Conference race the least of my concerns, says Caguioa
MARK Caguioa's fans are certainly happy to see his name atop the Best Player of the Conference derby halfway through the eliminations of the PBA Commissioner's Cup,
But he is not.
Although he said he takes a certain degree of pride in his achievements as an individual player, Caguioa said seeing his team near the bottom of the standings takes the shine out of any achievement.
“Kahit sino man ang tanungin mo na nangunguna sa best player (race) tapos yung record ng team mo 2-5 (win-loss), paano ka sasaya dun?” said the Ginebra superstar.
“My goal personally is not to win the Best Player of the Conference (award). I want to help Ginebra make the quarters, semis and then further up,” he added.
In the most recent statistical rankings released by the league, Caguioa paced all locals with 32.1 statistical points behind his averages of 22.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.4 assists through seven games. His closest pursuer, Gary David of Globalport, has 28.5 SPs.
Still, Caguioa said the numbers do not concern him.
“To tell you the truth, I don’t think about those stuff (statistics)," said the reigning league MVP. “I don’t go home, and think, 'Oh damn, ganito pala nagawa ko.'
“At the end of the day, I’m looking at my team. Are we happy? Is the coach happy? Are the fans contented?”
Caguioa also finds joy in the fact that the Ginebra fans didn't lose faith in the team during the Gin Kings' woeful 0-5 start to the mid-season tournament.
“Makikita mo naman kapag nanalo ang Ginebra, buong buo ang Araneta (Coliseum). Mapi-feel mo andyan yung suporta ng fans eh,” said Caguioa.
Asked if Ginebra is back on right track after the horror start, the 2001 Rookie of the Year said: “More work needs to be done. We just need to win more games, Talk 'N Text pa ang next (game on Sunday) medyo mahirap na kalaban yan… pero hindi sila imposibleng talunin.
“We just need to win more games and that’s it. We will do our best para ibalik (for the fans) ang dating angas ng Ginebra."
